I have some Remington .22LR Thunderbolts that fouls up my rifles and pistols with lead like crazy. :cuss:

What brand is the best (cleanest and most accurate) you have used?

CCI Mini Mags; and I prefer the solid points but hollow points are okay too. Of course there is more expensive, probably inherently more accurate ammo, but this is great run of the mill stuff. It is just expensive compared to stuff like CCI Blazer (virty dirty) or Remington Thunderbolt. I use them all, and others too; but if I were to go hunting, I would depend on the CCI mini mag.

All the best,
Glenn B

I used to have a walther p22 that was very picky about it's ammo. It hated the bulk remington and winchester ammo. The best bang for the buck I found was the federal bulk ammo. Very few FTF and the pistol had no problems cycling it. Though I will say the CCI stuff is the best shooting, it's also more expensive. just depends on what bugs you the least, a little extra money, or the occasional FTF.

edit: for what it's worth, in my experience, the 'thunderbolt' ammo has been complete crap.

For every day accurate clean shooting, I would pick Wolf Match Target (and its SK equivalent). For serious accuracy (yet still clean) I would choose some of the more expensive stuff. Of course, this is through MY guns. Your's may like something different.

If you are looking for inexpensive but accurate and consistant 22 ammunition, I'd suggest the Federal Champions. Walmat sells them. I've been shooting some PMC standard velocity Moderators of late and have been quite pleased with them for accuracy and overall price. They are still available from Sportsmans Guide. When they sell out, there will likely be no more as they are discontinued.

CCI Mini-Mags are an excellent choice as well. The Wolf Match and Match Targets are excellent and shoot well. The Remington Golden Bullets shoot pretty well in some of my rifles. I tend to get a lot of misfires with my current batch of Remington Thunderbolts and have not been real pleased. In the past, I had trouble seeing much difference between the golden bullets and the thunderbolts.

Different ammunition shoots better or worse in a given 22 handgun or rifle. You just have to try them out.

As with any other question about ammunition, you have to ask, "Best for WHAT?"

The only .22 shooting I do is bullseye pistol competition and practice. I use CCI Standard Velocity, as do most of the people in my league, except for the small number of top competitors who use Eley, RWS, etc.

I hate Remington. It seems to have a LOT of misfires, a tradition going back at least to the late '80s.

Try Aguila. It doesn't work that well in my High Standard target pistol, but seems to get very good results in Ruger MkIIs. I shoot it in my S&W Model 17 with no problems. I just use the Standard Velocity, but they have a variety of loads.

CCI Minis

Best performance I've had in a large range of guns. Though you can try Stingers and Velocitors. I am also playing with Remington Vipers, which seem to be okay, though not as good as the CCI stuff.

You should buy a bunch of 50rd boxes and see what your gun likes best. With the stock barrel on my 10/22 yellow jackets were most accurate. With the GM 16" barrel CCI MiniMags are most accurate (although I've only shot 3 brands thus far, I need to do some more testing also).

The Remington Thunderbolts are the worst ammo on the market. Anything else you can find will be an improvement...If you want cheap .22 ammo, get the Federal bulk pack at Walmart, it sells for around $9.88 per 550 brick, thats up about a dollar from last year....

I use Subsonics primarily`and I have used Aguila SE Extra and Remington Subsonics with good success.

The Aguila are a bit more reliable and quieter.

I would pick Wolf Match Target

I second that. My other favorites are Remington Green Tag and Federal Auto Match if I need to buy bulk. Velocitors were nice too.

Experiment with different brands of ammo and use whatever runs best. .22's are notoriously picky when it comes to ammo.
