.22LR ammo is now available, but where?

I was shocked to see some CB Shorts at a local Walmart about a week ago. That is literally the first 22 ammo I have seen at Walmart in a couple years. I didn't buy any.

The higher priced "target" ammo seems to be around. I pretty much refuse to pay that much for something I may just plink with. But I have been tempted to pick up some of the Norma stuff as I have never shot it (even though I feel the price is high). These are at Cabelas, Gander Mt, Sportsman Warehouse and so forth. Seldom visit Academy Sports, but there are two stores in the immediate area.

Not here. The only stuff I've seen on the shelves is target ammo priced at over 10 cents a round.

I've heard that some modestly price 22 shows up once in while, but by the time I get off work it's gone - if it was ever really there......

Shipping costs pretty much kill most of the online stuff for me. So not much rimfire shooting for me these days.

Three 325-rd. boxes yesterday (guarded at the register) in a fairly new gun/archery shop in Evansville, IN, just a bit west of downtown.

One 325-rd. box per customer. Price was about $25 for this blue/white box of Federal. We also went into Rajo's, where many people go only to chuckle at their unrealistically high retail prices and buy nothing.

I live in Baltimore, and I had to go up into PA, a few months ago, to get 22LR.

Freedom Armory had some, and I hit the jackpot at a place called Shyda's up near Lebanon. Scored 22, CCI primers, etc.

They had plenty...

South-central Florida, east coast. Two of the three Wal-Mart stores in my city sell firearms and ammunition, and the third, ammo only. No .22LR since January of 2014.

But... it's been readily available at the Bass Pro here for quite a few months now. Not every day, but at least 2-4 days a week. When it is available, it's usually quite a bit at a time, including MiniMags in 100-ct and 300-ct boxes, Winchester whatever-their-HV-stuff-is, Federal Champion and AutoMatch, and Remington stuff.

I've not checked any other places. Haven't needed to.

It's showing up pretty regular at the local gun/pawn shop I frequent. If you don't find any when you are there one day give it a week and then you find a shelf with it, so kind of like Georgia, waves. I haven't found any at the local walley world.

What I have been seeing in central NC is availability at big box stores. A true 500 round brick can be found fairly easily for between $35 and $40. Hopefully those prices moderate over time.

The Federal 325 packs can also be found at $20 to $25, depending where you shop.

100 round Mini Mag boxes are around.

Wal-Mart is the worst place to go, by far. If you go by them, you will think things are worse than they really are.

Gun shows have stock again, unlike 2 years ago. It is no longer impossible to find. Things are getting better. I had a decent stash before the shortage, so I haven't been looking as hard as some other folks.

Same in SWFL - no luck at Walmart, but Bass Pro occasionally has some behind the counter on a rationing basis.

Speaking to the Walmart staff, they still get a delivery that is put out at 7am every Saturday, and the same dozen guys turn up like clockwork every weekend, line up, and buy all the bulk packs by 7:05 ("three per customer"). I have not seen 22LR on the shelf there in 2 years, and I'm not going in at 7am for the small amount I use.

Lots of retirees around here with nothing better to do than hoard ammo. Almost never see anyone shooting 22LR at the public range.

I buy 22 online when I see it in stock. I just bought (2) 100 round boxes of Remington Golden Bullets on my Cabela's order, paid 10 bucks/piece for them. I like shooting my 1911 22, so I'll pay the ridiculous prices.

GoldPelican, lately, when Bass Pro has been getting it, they've been putting some of it on the counter that the rest is kept behind. I guess, when they have it, they get tired of being asked for it. The last time I was there, a week or so back, they had about forty or more 100-ct boxes of the Winchester HV stuff (don't remember the name, but it compares somewhat to the MiniMags in rated velocity) behind the counter, and about a dozen on it for the taking. I took three of them.

Somebody earlier said they never see anyone shooting .22, same here. I've been shooting for over 30 years and have a lot of friends/family that shoots, but nobody shooting .22 anymore. 5.56, 9mm, 45 etc, but not .22. I can only imagine the vast amount some people have stored up. I hope to get on that train when I can once again find .22 at any time, not just when I get there on the right day of the week.

Here in Southwest Florida, it's basically a waste of time even looking for it at Walmart. The pawnshops and LGS's, on the other hand, sometimes have it at breathtaking prices.
I stopped into a gun shop in Arcadia, Florida a few weeks ago and saw a pretty good stack of 50rd CCI Quiets behind the counter. Since these are my go-to round for backyard squirrel control and I hadn't seen any in years, my hopes rose.
When I asked the price, my hopes fell again.
Ten bucks!
The last pre-panic box I bought was $2.97 at Walmart.
I guess I'll just have to let the squirrels take over my yard again. :(

Last Saturday I was taking the last two boxes of Perfecta .357 off the shelf at $17 per box, screaming deal, and saw some bulk packs (333 rounds) of Winchester hollow point so I picked up yet another box and tossed it in the closet. It was about 10:00am and I was at Walmart. I guess the same dozen guys missed this case. Myth busted.

So it is available, you just have to put out a little effort to get it.

I can only imagine the vast amount some people have stored up.
No different than a 401(k), everything I am buying now is for one day far into the future.

I am in rural Southern Missouri and "hoarding" is still the situation down here. Every morning at 0730 when the ammo is brought out on the floor the same 5 or 6 guys are standing there waiting to buy every box and resell it at local gun shows for big profits. By 0745 it's all gone. When they started limiting sales to one box per customer they started to bring all of their friends and it's all gone in 15 minutes. This and the outrageous prices have caused me to give up on rimfire. Don't know if this will ever end. :banghead: I have stopped going to gunshows or even looking for rimfire at the stores. The managers at the store tell me this has been going on for years now. People keep telling me it's "supply and demand" - but it's much worse than that. It's simple greed.

stop imposing quantity limits

If retailers would abandon their "three box" or whatever arbitrary limit they impose, the perception of scarcity would go away.

Suppose one customer comes in and buys the entire store's inventory. So what. The next 1000 customers will be annoyed when they're nothing left on the shelf. So what. Next week, or next month, another shipment comes in and someone buys all of it again. It won't be long before the number of retail customers willing to spend $1000, or $10,000, in one fell swoop will diminish, and the perception of limited supply will disappear. Those who bought and stored enormous quantities of product will be left with product they can't easily sell. That quickly leads to a race to the bottom of price support.

Remember the gas lines of the 70s? I do. If you don't, rationing was imposed and you couldn't buy gas except on specific days... etc.

No_gas_1974.gif

No sooner did you fill your gas tank that you started looking to fill it again. Everyone was driving around with full tanks, and panicked when the gas gauge approached 1/2 full.

There were violent incidents:

The difference was that the gas shortages of the 1970s were real... an ammunition shortage of any caliber (at least as of right now) is merely perceived. Quantity limits are exacerbating that perception.

The gas shortage in the 70's was mostly political. There really was no gasoline shortage. The 22 ammo shortage is real, but it is improving. I hate the 3-box limit imposed by retailers. But I feel it is and was a reasonable response to the shortage after the Sandy Hook incident.

Remember the sugar shortage? That pretty much happened after we embargoed deliveries from Cuba. Beer was cheaper to buy than a coke. Argentina had a toilet paper shortage.

My lgs has been having some 22lr. Its still a little pricey but I got 2 300 Rd boxes of ccI tactical for $28 and left 5 more of those boxes on the shelf. They didn't impose any limit on it. A couple of days ago they had cci minimags and cci subsonic and cci quiets for $10/ 100 rds and Aguila 60 gr "sniper" for 10 cts/ round and I got 2 100 rds of the subsonic for my 22 bolt action. Left about 2000 rds of the cci of thr 3 types on the shelf.

I have been shooting my 22s lately. No brass to pick up except by the range staff.

Local Acadamy had plenty of 22lr today. I picked up 1K for $49.00

Local WallyWorld had some yesterday. I passed on it.

The Local Academy or the local Walmart really does not say much as "local" is really sort of broad in scope isn't it? Never fails how people who choose not to list a location (which I can understand) post in threads with a focus on local and nobody knows where local is? So forgive me asking why bother to post at all?

I've been doing some reading through the different threads and keep hearing from people who say they can go to their LGS and find reasonably priced .22 on the shelf with no problem.

I'd like to know exactly what parts of the country people are finding it in. I'm curious if location has something to do with it. I'll get it started.

I live in Central Wisconsin and just went to Scheels to get some because the last time I went there, they had started stocking it again after being totally empty for about a year. They had only Target ammo which cost a minimum of $10 for a box of 50. Today, I went there hoping they got more, and all they had was several boxes of .22 Short black powder rounds and several more boxes of .22 blanks

So, no .22 ammo around here! Oh yeah, absolutely nothing at Walmart either.

The Original Poster was pretty specific as to his location.

Can you order online?

Hi BBeaz

Yes of course! If you don't know where to start here is a good site to find any caliber you want: http://ammoseek.com

Be careful about shipping charges, since ammunition is heavy and expensive to ship. However, many vendors have flat shipping prices once in a while (such as $10 or so) or a price not to exceed something like $20. Or, if you order over $xxx shipping is free.

I've had good luck finding it at the local Wal Mart, Dicks sporting goods, and Academy. Our Dicks has a very tiny shooting section and it seems like no one ever thinks about going there to get Ammo. They had a ton of 22 even during the height of the 22 shortage.

According to the date stamp I took this in July of 2015.

For Wal Mart I don't have to go at 7am but it does help to go before lunch. I picked up a 1000 round box of Winchester M22 for $51+tax just last week when I hit the Wal Mart up Friday morning around 10am. They had 3 such boxes at that time. I could have gotten all 3 but I didn't need them.
