.22LR ammo is now available, but where?

22 may not go thru another (or as extreme) supply cycle as in the past due to a large number of folks (like myself) that are new to the caliber.

I didn't even own a 22 until a few years ago - with the explosion of big gun clones in 22 (1911's, AR's, etc.) I went from shooting none to using quite a bit of 22.

New 22 AR shooters have probably tapered off (based on how slowly 22 AR's are moving at the shop these days) and many like myself probably have all the 22 we need to feed our new toys.

I think the recent shortage of 22 was the result of a perfect storm:
1. The sales explosion of new 22 AR's (which has now been satisfied).
2. I hear some preppers are stocking up on 22 to use as currency.
3. Any politician opening their mouth.
4. Flippers that hit local Walmarts (often with the help of store buddies) and buy up all the supply.

If the first 2 above had not happened, I don't know if flippers would have entered the equation, or at least to the degree they have.

Anywho...I've always kept a good stash of favorite calibers in order to avoid the panic buying and price spikes.

Since I was new to the 22 game, I kinda got ambushed by the 22 shortage.

Got all I really need, but if the price does take a significant nosedive in the near future, I'll probably up my inventory.

True. I bought 2000 rounds of CCI SV in the 100rd plastic boxes from SWVA Arms a couple of weeks ago. $9.31 a box, $13 flat rate shipping vs Midway's $12.99 for a brick, $199.20 total. About as close to 10 cents a round as possible....but I was happy to get it. It's very accurate in several of my guns, and quieter than MiniMags. Since I moved up to the mountains, we shoot a lot more .22 than we ever used to. Plinking in the backyard, squirrel control, and the grandkids are getting old enough to start using up the supply.

Midway is not alone. It's common on 7.7cent/round on ammoseek.com but limits of 500 rounds and shipping of $19-20, which adds 4 cents a round. Makes it 11+ cents a round real quick. When you can buy 2000 rounds and pay $13 shipping, it drops to .65 cents per round. I shoulda bought more!

A Walmart across town is next to a LGS. I stop there to use the bathroom and check for ammo. One time they'd just had a weekend sale (unknown to most shooters) and the lady brought out a box with CCI 100s for $6.50 each, limit 2. Needless to say....

Dicks is in the same shopping center as Sam's Club and their Lodge people are fairly knowledgable. Whenever I ask about .22 they tell me the front desk has it (or not) and when the price is under 7 cents I get two boxes. If it's under 6 cents my wife gets a call and buys two boxes. Recently the supply has improved.

Nothing at WalMart for the last three years at least. DFW area, two or three WMs checked semi-regularly, total of a half a dozen checked as time permits.

LGS is my primary supply, but they are sporadic. At least their prices are reasonable when they have stock.

At/below .07/round I will buy; at slightly above I will consider buying. My cutoff is .08/rd.

Just bought 1000 rounds today--$36/500 out the door.

Last time I went to the Dunham's in Mishawaka, Indiana they had +/- 40,000 rounds. Shelves were absolutely loaded. That was maybe three weeks ago. I'm up to maybe 7,000 rounds so I passed.

Federal Auto in 325 is available most any time if I look.

It's a shame our local gun shop doesn't ship (I joked with him about it today).

I feel for you folks that still can't find 22 at between 5 and 6 cents a round (standard bricks).

Today I asked if they had started refusing 22 other than the high priced target stuff (which I knew they had already started refusing) and they said the only other thing they had started refusing was some 100-rd. boxes, but don't recall the specifics.

He tends to stock mostly bricks / big boxes, along with the usual 100-rd. boxes of various flavors of CCI and some Winchester specialty 22 ammo also in 100-rd. boxes.

Hang it there folks! Hopefully the drought in your area will end soon.

Kansas City - I spoke with my buddy today and he said he had scored some more Winchester 333 rounds for $17.xx at Walmart again. He works second shift and he gets out in the morning to shop for his elderly father, so whenever he is at Walmart he checks. Sounds like it is getting better. He has made his purchases around 9 or 10am. Sounds like the resellers are no longer lining up at the gun counter to buy it all up as soon as the bring it out.

I've been doing some reading through the different threads and keep hearing from people who say they can go to their LGS and find reasonably priced .22 on the shelf with no problem.

I'd like to know exactly what parts of the country people are finding it in. I'm curious if location has something to do with it. I'll get it started.

I live in Central Wisconsin and just went to Scheels to get some because the last time I went there, they had started stocking it again after being totally empty for about a year. They had only Target ammo which cost a minimum of $10 for a box of 50. Today, I went there hoping they got more, and all they had was several boxes of .22 Short black powder rounds  and several more boxes of .22 blanks :barf:

So, no .22 ammo around here! Oh yeah, absolutely nothing at Walmart either.
Same here it everywhere except where I went to and they are out.

I ordered 4 cartons from Graf yesterday. Their 7.95 flat rate shipping made them come out to 6.7 cents a round. Sale lasted longer than 45 minutes. I did not see the e-mail until late last evening, at first would not accept my order, tried a second time, accepted. Shipped today, will be at my door Tuesday. I have always liked to deal with Grafs, they do not try to gouge you.

It's the 21st century. ammo is bought over the net. I have had no problem ordering midrange ammo and above in 1 case quantities.

For most Americans, yes. But some of the more hoplophobic metropolitan zip codes such as, for example, the City of Los Angeles, are ammunition no-ship zones. Those living within must procure their ammunition the 20th Century way: jump into the car and go get it.

Actually that is a good point. There are several states and locations where ammunition can't be shipped leaving those folks to go out and find it the old fashion way. :)

The Gander Mountain I mentioned wasn't cheap but they had plenty. The CCI Mini Mags Swamp People was $30 for a 300 round box but CCI is always slightly higher cost and the Remington Golden Bullets were $31.49 for a 550 round bulk pack. They also had some RWS Match stuff for $7.00 a 50 round box. Seeing more and more of the high end match stuff like the Eley flavors.

Local wall mart has .22 two or three times a week now, some has been staying two days or more. .38,.357,.40,.45 acp,.45 lc,9mm,.32 acp,.243,308,30-06, and a lot of other calipers are advailable also. The .22mag,.17 hmr and the .17hm2 never show up. I have got rid of my .17hmr and my .22mag for that reason,I still have about 3000 hm2 left for now. The .22 stingers have been showing up every week or so.

I bought 2 bricks of Federal Auto Match at the gun show yesterday, $23/325 rounds. That's not bad. They guy had 10 bricks on his table and they were still there 2 hours later when I left.

Just ordered 2 bricks of CCI swamp people 300 rounds bricks for $56 shipped from Cabelas.

I thought that it was getting easier to find, but I'm rethinking that. I bought a Ruger SR22 a couple weeks ago and started asking at every place that sells ammo about 22LR, and I've been at how little I have found. It seems like they either have it, and price is reasonable or they have little or none.

I don't see how the flippers can buy it all up at Wal-Mart, then resell it now. Even the gun show prices are pretty reasonable. Seems to me, it will be harder and harder for them to turn this stuff and make a profit.

My local gun store in Ft Collins had CCI Mini-Mags in the 100 round trays as well as a lot of CCI Standard velocity on Saturday. They also had 525 round bulk backs of Federal 22 LR for $36 and Remington 500 round bulk packs for $37. No .22 magnum though. I think the Mini-Mags were around $9.

Academy Sports today, Bartlett TN.

What's wrong with ordering online? Based on similar prices there is very little difference.

You must pay shipping, but no sales tax. Do people still believe that the US govt. is interested in a few thousand rds. of ammo we own?
You could be lying in a red velvet casket next week, but.... worry about being individually tracked for ammo? This truly baffles me.:scrutiny:
