Any idea how much holdover the scope was set for? And was it a really calm or directly into or with the wind shot?

It's sure fun to stretch stuff like this out to distances far longer than most would consider as normal. Nicely done Mr Sniper sir :D

Thank you Sir

It was a "gusty" light breeze where i was sitting, head wind, as you may have noticed it was a little left to right at the target. that canyon makes for some weird winds for sure!

I can't wait to start some long-range shooting like this, my friend has a property with some really great vantage points and range.

Sweet video!

22 cal. long range shooting

I have done some long range prairie dog shooting with my Rem. 581 22 cal. rifle. The longest kill was 367yrds. and longest hit 450yrds. I enjoyed shooting it at those ranges more than my 22-250;s or 25-06. Have 2 kills with 25-06 over 1000yrds. Really enjoyed shooting P-dogs, but last year was my last time, getting to old and drouth killed most of our dog's in Texas. Already sold my rifles except for the 22 I'll hand it down to my grandson, SOMEDAY. Al

Awesome video! I think I spotted a federal bulk pack. Is that what you were using to make those hits?

Great shooting, can't wait to get out this weekend and try something similar. Except maybe 350 yards to start ;)

Federal bulk pack is not what was used while filming the shooting. but it works good also. it seems to have a big velocity spread, and at that distance that's like 10 feet... lol

BCRider, he's using a variable gantry mount that adjusts the whole scope angel for different ranges, so I don't think he adjusted the scope itself.

I could be wrong!

Aloha Clayne B,

Very nice shooting. I have aspirations to do much like you have, pushing the .22 to its limits. I have ordered and am waiting for a Savage Mark II BTVS and hope to be able to shoot as far as you have or farther. I think it would be a great challenge.

Mahalo,

Matt

The savage will be a good gun for you... I got my neighbor into shooting. he went with the savage. and he shoots 500 yards with it also! You will have alot of fun playing around with the .22 at long range. fyi some ammo that shoots great at 50 yards dosnt do to well at 500. and some do. So for ammo testing. test at long range for shooting at long range..

here is a pic of his, mine in the background

Are you using the $350 or $400 scope mount?

there is no $400 mount, $400 is with a dial indicator for adjusting the base. You do not have to have a dial indicator although if you knew your exact drop for said range you could dial it in just right and hit it first shot!

I have shot at this range with other guns with a 50 yard zero. backing the scope off to the minimum x and just holding over.... and if you look straight above the target to that snow covered mountain at the top, that is where the cross hairs were :bthumb:

So then I could probably do some shooting like this with my Mil-Dots?

My ballistic software says my furthest MilDot down is 250 yards. Maybe if I change my zero to something else it could get all the way out to 500?

Marlin60Man, that is what I will be doing. If you have an iPod Touch or an iPhone, it's pretty easy to get a nice ballistics calculator that will tell you your drops and holdovers (in every unit imaginable) for all kinds of ammunition. With a 210 yard zero, my Ballistics FTE app says I need to hold 5 mils to make a hit at 300 yards using CCI Mini Mags.

But your altitude/pressure/temperature/humidity may vary along with your results ;)

This kind of shooting is too much fun!

Isn't the drop at 500 yards with standard ammo a little over 40 feet? The wind could change direction 4 or 5 times before the bullet gets to the target.

Thank you CJ 74

JohnBT, that sounds about right. and yes the wind is a bitch for sure... especial in that canyon i shoot in. in that video, I had wind in my face and at the target it was left to right. and it changes alot, that's why i try and shoot fast. to keep in the same conditions

If nothing else, that would have kept some bad guy's heads down for sure.

My nephew is really into the Aquila .22 ammo. With his 1416 D Anschutz I have seen him make some long range shots that were simply amazing using the Aguila .22 low velocity 60 grain bullets.

I need to try those 60 gr bullets again, had some a few years back but didnt really put them to the test. lol
