My CZ 457 was ok with what ammo I had available, but un-inspiring. Its very good with the drop in Lothar Walther barrel tho.
Im seriously considering having my FFL buddy order a Ruger American Rimfire in .17 for me as i dont think ill take rhe LW barrel off my 457. Even tho the .17 barrel was stunningly accurate, i just dont really want to swap tubes on my rimfire.

I had a mossberg 802 plinkster heavy barrel that was surprisingly accurate. On a good day I could give a good enough accounting for myself to say its mechanical accuracy was at least as good as the 457. The mossbergs major failing is its heavy trigger, and there wasnt much I could do about it without changing engagement angles and im loath to do that.

Thanks for all the replies and my LGS guy is on the lookout..but, of course, nothing is really available anywhere...

I 'may' just keep the 10/22..it's a takedown, 'backpacker' and storage in house and in car really easy...

Thanks again

Another vote for the RAR. One of the main reasons I got my first one was so that I could use the 10/22 mags I'd accumulated over the years and I liked it so much that I now own two RARs. The one in the top picture is a Standard with the 22" barrel (that I had threaded) and the Copper Mica stock. The one in the bottom picture is the Target model with the laminate stock. I'm in love with both of them.

I've had a Marlin for 30 years and it still shoot as accurate as the day I bought it. It beats a 10/22 by miles which I owned and traded off for the Marlin. 10/22 has a hard trigger pull and rapid firing is no advantage to putting a shot in the x-ring.

I can recommend the BX trigger module from Ruger for the 10/22 -- they are a relatively inexpensive upgrade (in normal times -- I paid about $50 for both of mine a couple years back) and do make a noticeable difference.

CZ455 with replacement heavy/fluted .17 HMR barrel, (removable magazine is not shown). I was lucky to get this rifle in near-new condition at Kittery Trading Post, Kittery, ME. Pillar-bedded, and free-floated the stock by opening the barrel channel.

Original barrel was standard factory .22WMR, but it handles/shoots even better with the .17 HMR. Love the HMR cartridge and haven't used the WMR barrel since. A guy could get .22LR, or either of the other two and be a very happy camper. (A different magazine may be needed for .22LR, but I haven't checked.)

Aside from shooting 1 MOA at 100 yards with the .17 HMR, it's killed crows, skunks, woodchucks, and a couple of coyotes, one running directly away in a blueberry field...offhand at 130 yards. (Maybe just a little luck involved?)

2B58BED5-7340-49D2-BAF5-77A9271004D7.jpeg This was my retirement present to myself 18 years ago. I can't really recommend it because it was a serious investment on my part and is now nearly double what I paid for it. Worth every penny. The Fortner bolt makes it nearly as fast as a semi.
Made a harness so i could ski with it and hunt small game in the snowy back country. Can’t do that anymore. I use it nowadays for smallbore prone.

I think I will vote Savage MkII, run this one with CCI Standard Velocity:

And while it my irritate the CZ guys on RFC, this rifle is equally accurate. I do have some aftermarket parts, bottom plate and such installed. I bought it at Gander, there was a rebate and it was on reduced price. I also have a MkII Target and it is sighted in with CCI Quiet for starling/pest control, also an equally accurate rifle (also was on sale and rebate).

I just got my RAR 22 mag we were all talking about in a different thread. I shot it Saturday and it was great. if you already have a 10/22 it seems like a perfect match.

I have read that the target versions of Savages will shoot with the standard CZ sometimes. But they cost as much or more and are heavy. And as you said, may need upgrades. There is a test on Gun tests that bears that out. It depends on ammunition and distance. The average on the CZ was a little better but very close.

I have shot in local sporter 50 yard benchrest matches in a few different places. Occasionally, you will see a Savage, Rem 541 S or T, Kimber, ect. However, 9 outta 10 matches are won with a CZ...Probably because 9 out 10 guys are using a CZ...lol.

New and if you can afford it, CZ. I've got a Savage MKII that I'm also very happy with. The Ruger American's seem hit or miss from what I've read on the forums as far as accuracy goes, and I've never been impressed with Ruger's rifle accuracy to begin with.

Don't discount old used rimfires though. Mossberg had some great bolt action .22's in the 40's and 50's and a lot were set up with peep sights. A Remington 513 would be a sweet gun to have as well, though I'd prefer the 512 and a tube magazine myself.

Yes sir. The upgrades I did were a one piece EGW scope mount to more solidly anchor the scope and bottom metal. I worked the triggers on the MkIIs myself. I epoxy bedded the stocks and actions. Nothing unusual. I purchased both rifles with target bull barrels intentionally which are heavy, my Target MkII has a 22 inch barrel so yes it is heavy. They will both eat out a tiny hole at 50 yards off my bench. I have carried the pictured MkII squirrel hunting but it is not really a walking hunter, more like find a good spot to snipe from and then give the squirrels hell! :) . I might get around to picking up a CZ in due course, just because. But, I like to modify, tweak, rebuild, make better my rifles, it is part of the fun and challenge to me. These are not my most accurate rimfires, my 10/22 wears that crown unless I pull out my Marlin 917VS which, to date, is the most accurate rifle I have owned and possibly seen. I am sure there are better but it is known to shoot essentially one hole groups of three. It has the Timney trigger, home made base metal, epoxy bedded stock, and since this photo an EGW single piece rail, scope is still junk.

This 917, I talked the manager down a bunch on it, the stock is inleted crooked. Stock was so crooked I figured it must shoot straight to compensate ;).

My Savage FSVR is very accurate, but cannot recommend as the extractor is constantly having to be re-adjusted for c-clip tension (i.e. bending the c-clip for more tension). Very frustrating.

CZ rimfires are awesome.

Would like to try a Ruger American bolt someday, given I have lots of 10/22 mags.

The 77/22 is a fine bolt action rifle that uses 10/22 mags. I had to get another barrel for mine to get it to shoot to my satisfaction though. I have an American too, that uses 10/22 mags looks and feels like a less expensive rifle and it is.
Mine will shoot the tits off a fly, though. I like it pretty good.

I blame this thread: I couldn't take it. Realizing I didn't own a single bolt-action 22LR rifle, nor a CZ rifle of any make and model, when I saw a CZ 457 Lux today at Scheels, it demanded to be bought and given a home, and I simply could not say "no".
Good call from a fellow enabler

Well, they didn't have that model. I got the closest. I'm waiting for the polish to dry, and I'll take and post a pic.

The grain pattern is really quite nice, but the color is kind of dark. I think it was a mistake to include the white test target paper in the shot as it probably threw off the camera's color reproduction. It looks nicer in person. Maybe I'll take another pic tomorrow in natural light. The two Training models they had there at Scheel's, with the Beechwood stocks, had the nicest Beechwood I've ever seen on a rifle. My walnut stock, above, is probably not quite as nice as a typical Henry rifle stock, but I wanted the Monte Carlo buttstock, and I wanted checkering, which the Training model doesn't have either, so that's why I got the Lux model instead.

Some guns will do that. Just stand up and demand to come home with you. I know they've done it to me.
