I was looking at a .22LR rifle for backyard plinking.

My thoughts immediately turned to the Ruger 10/22, a firearm with which I am very familiar. I was going for the Tactical version, which has a scope rail and a threaded barrel for just $39 more than the base model. I think I can get this for about $250.

Since backyard shooting needs to be somewhat quiet, I was looking at a Silencerco Sparrow SS. It reduces noise from ~150 to ~110dB, making it neighborhood-friendly. I think I can get this for $499.

Does anyone have a better rifle/suppressor?

A bolt action would be slightly quieter. I have never had a chance to shoot the sparrow, but have heard good things. I have a SWR Spectre and really enjoy it on my Ruger 77/22. As long as you use subsonic ammo, it should be very quiet.

I have an old ruger 10/22 that I recently put a threaded barrel on to use with a suppressor. It is just as accurate and extremely quiet. Sounds like a pellet gun. The suppressor is made by Ghost (a local firm here in Jacksonville, Florida. It cost $250 (bought a little over a year ago).

First off, is it legal to discharge a firearm in a neighborhood with a suppressor where you live?

Even if it is quiet, you are looking at a quick way to lose your 2nd amendment rights...

I've been shooting my air rifle in the backyard for over two years, and before that I played airsoft all night long with some friends. I don't think they care anymore.

Edit: The houses are about 10 yards apart, and there's a ton of woods to the back. I just shoot straight to the back.

Okay, regardless of what you have been doing, what you are talking about doing can cause you to lose your rights to own a firearm for the rest of your life.

Obviously, the gravity of the situation is not getting through to you. I am guessing that you aren't even old enough to own a suppressor because of the line of reasoning that you are using to justify shooting a firearm in your backyard.

Do you think that there are no other kids that play airsoft in the woods behind your house?.....Murder will get you in even more trouble than just shooting within city limits...

You should be able to get an adequate .22 suppressor for far less than $500. That is assuming you already have the stamp.

I have a Tac65 that was less than $300 and use it on three rifles and a pistol. Using subsonic rounds with a bolt action it is virtually silent. The semis make a bit more noise because of the action. It is NOT silent if you use regular 22 ammo.

I would be very careful and check the laws before I started shooting a 22, silenced or not, in an area with neighbors close by. It is very likely to be illegal to fire any gun in the area. I personally can walk out in my front yard in my undies and fire off 500 rounds of .223 without anyone noticing but I live in the boonies.

Try a box of Aguilla SSS 60 grain ammo before you buy an expensive suppresor. While it is not as quiet as a supressed rifle it is not as loud as a standard .22lr and will function your bolt unlike most other subsonic ammo.
I use it in my pump and it is far quieter than the 10/22 it does help.
The OP didnt ask about legality and is bound to wind up in hot water so the extra 250.00 will in some small way help with the legal fees that he is bound to encur.

Well, judging from the replies, I should probably walk a few hundred meters into the woods. And this is a rural area; by "woods" I mean the "there are trees everywhere and deer and other game," not the "patch of trees between houses" woods.

I checked my local codes, and I'm not allowed to fire any weapon "larger than .22 rimfire in caliber" unless at a range. Calibers under .22 rimfire must be discharged 150 yards from a dwelling. I'll just walk a few hundred feet until there's no dwellings in view.

Just make sure you don't go spraying off (know your target and what is beyond it). There could be others playing back there. Also make sure you are of age to be in possession of a firearm alone.

Yessir. However, I am not yet old enough to possess a suppressor, so I might use subsonic ammo instead. I hate ear protection, especially in the summer. Never gone without it, but it gets really irritating.

A long barreled bolt action or single shot rifle and 22 Long CB caps is a quiet combination. They might work in a 10/22 but will not have enough recoil to work the action.

I have several .22 suppressors but more often than not still use CB longs around the house (legally). I don't have a problem leaving a .22 out in the shop handy but not my form 1 or form 4 stuff.

You might just look up some subsonic target ammo and try that. I've been very surprised at how quiet some of those rounds are. I've taken some subsonic solids hunting before and the bullet striking a squirrel at 20 yards seemed louder than the report of the round.

CCI has a new .22 round in .22lr, 'Quiet 22'. This ammo has a 40 gr. bullet which should have better accuracy than the CB's, part #960.

OP should reconsider air rifles. there are several out now that are powerful and accurate.

I would have, but all the air rifles require manual cocking (like my Gamo) and rarely do they feed from a magazine. A .22 rifle allows for semiautomatic fire from a magazine.

All rifles do not require manual cocking. There are pre-charged pneumatic air rifles that fire from rotary magazines, use pressurized gas, and are semi-automatic. Go look at EdgunUSA on youtube.

I take that back. All powerful air rifles require cocking. Pneumatics are usually less than 900 FPS, and CO2 is around 600. I don't want to spend too much on too little product, and buying a $400 air rifle strikes me as just that.

Again, not quite right. There are PCP air rifles that shoot over 1,000 FPS. The PCP air rifles that I have shot are also more accurate than break barrel rifles that are comparably priced. I would be more than happy on buying a more expensive air rifle that allows me to shoot near my house for practice and take care of nuisance animals legally.
