It occurs to me that, at a certain point, we are no longer talking about 243 but more about hunting skills. I read a lot of comments to the effect of "I wouldn't try it." My hunt partner shoots a 270, but he won't shoot anything beyond 100 yrds. He is a much better hunter than I am. He can patiently move to within 100 yrds of a game animal. I'm a much better marksman than I am a hunter. I'm comfortable taking much longer shots than he is. I limit my shots to 300 yrds not because it's too far, but because the bullet velocity drops to a point that the bullet won't expand at about 325 or 350 yrds.
So for those of you who limit yourself to x yards, that's fine, but recognize that it's a limitation you place on yourself (and probably for good reason and every ethical hunter has a limit and should know that limit), but recognize the limitation is yours and not that of the cartridge.
