"What to do with the 270"?
That's really been the question since the first post and why so many suggested the 243.

You keep the .270, the .25-06 may overlap with the .270 but they are still two different cartridges. Heck, I have a .243 and a .25-06 which overlap even more but they have different uses.

I would imagine many of us have guns that are very close to each other in use.

.243 or 25-06

25-06 without a doubt .Have shot one for years. Old Savage heavy stainless long before Accu-trigger. Good accuracy. Coyote 725 yards with laser rangefinder Probably lucky but not for Wiley Coyote. First group was 1.063 at 100 yd 5 shots,3 into.465. Again lucky?

Wearing a 2x-7x VX-2 for now, in Talley extra low one piece mounts.....

I think that the overlap with the 270 is pretty minimal. I've been shooting a lot of 115gr OTM thru the 270, and the 25-06 acquisition lets me focus the 270 on the heavier stuff now...

When I bought my first centerfire rifle I wanted it chambered in .270 Win. I'd always thought that it was a great cartridge. Well, sometimes things don't go as we plan. My first centerfire was a Remington 700 VS that was not offered in .270.

The guy behind the counter looked over the specs, and there were a lot of choices at the time. He told me the closest cartridge to a .270 was the .25-06. What a choice that was in 1978. I still have that rifle though I did wear the barrel out. It now sports a Krieger and shoots unbelievably small groups. I'll part with my .25-06 only when I'm dead.

But I envy you owning a .270 Win. In 38 years I never got the .270 that I wanted. That .25-06 did everything I ever asked it to do. It's been deer hunting and bear hunting in Canada. It has taken probably 800 groundhogs in Ohio.

If I buy one more rifle though I bet you can guess what cartridge I want.

I hate hearing all the praise for the .25-06 since Ive been actively looking for a .243! As does the OP, I have a .270, as well as a .308, and was looking for something different in a short action.
