I have been loading the 243 Win for many years using Sierra 85 gr hpbt.with IMR4350 @ my maximum of 43.0 grs. In Rem & Win brass. CCI Br2 Primer.

Speer data lists-
Speer 85 gr #1213
IMR 4350 @ 46 grs maximum. (Use starting load and work up, i do)
H4350 @ 42.8 grs maximum.

Having loaded both powder, H4350 seems to have a slower burn rate and requires more powder then the IMR.

No chronograph to check velocity. Sold it many years ago.

Question: Has anyone worked up loads with both powders using this Speer 85 gr bullet?

Thank you.

The Speer data using IMR 4350 @ 46 grs maximum with their 85 gr seems to be correct.

Used Speers starting load 42 gr. , soot covered most of the case body.. The fired case mouth had not expanded enough to accept a bullet. Both low pressure signs.
43 grs same with long COL. Seated bullet deeper into case using COL of 2.625" cleaned up some. Bullet would go in fired case, but tight. Vertical stringing on target.

Old brass thats been fired 20 times may not be expanding as it should, work hardened?

Took 5 new Rem brass of the same lot. Loaded 1 each at 45.5, 45, 44.5, 44, and 43.5 grs. Shot them just to check pressure. No target.. No issues.

Next week, will test the upper loads on target. Not expecting great accuracy.

Bullets appear to be seconds or just poor quality? There is a ridge on some of the bullets shank, not all, that catches a thumb nail. Not a smooth transition.

The target will know. Speer85Gr1213hpbt243.jpg

Just checked hogden site they only list data for Barnes ttsx 85 gr bullets with either 4350 powders. Burn rate seems slow toe for 85 gr bullets.

Have you anealed your cases to remove stress from the brass. I'd aneal and retry or get new brass. 20 firings is slot of use and may not have many more reloads left in to before primer pockets loosen up.

Shot 44.5 gr up to 46.0 grs maximum today. No soot on case body. Accuracy as i expected, not great. Average for 20 shots @ 100 yds, 1.152" out of my Rem 600 Mohawk.

Soot caused by low pressure starting load of 42 grs and long COL.

The Speer data is ok with their 85 gr #1213. Bullets look and shoot like seconds.
