I am amazed how many think that Bauer is a good gun. I bought one in the 70's and it was the worst gun I ever owned. It would jam every 4th round or so. The only thing worse was the AMT Backup .380 which nearly got me killed due to the safety lever breaking (3 times). I dumped them both.:cuss:

A needle can be lethal with correct placement. That doesn't make it ideal.

What we are talking about here is degrees of likelihood that a given bullet will stop the bad guy from doing what he is doing. All handgun rounds suck. The .25 is probably at the bottom of the list. When you are fighting for your life, you may be wounded, you may have only one hand, (not necessarily your strong hand,) one or both of you may be moving, you may have poor lighting. These are not the circumstances where I want to use a stubby gun with a poor grip to put a bullet through someone's temple.

Would I stand in front of one? Of course not. BUT, say on the other hand, you were faced with a situation where you KNEW you were going to be shot, and you could choose between a 9mm, a .45, or a .25? You are allowed to wear leather and stand at a weird angle. NOW which one seems the least harmful?

I'll be testing Hornady JHP and S&B FMJ in this caliber today.
I'm curious about the brass-alloy jacketed S&B, the Fiocchi FMJ that has a similar brass-looking jacket I recovered had practically no rifling marks on it compared to the WWB FMJ I recovered. I just want to see if the bullet will fit the bore better than Fiocchi. I hope the Hornady JHP expands, the only hollow point bullet I could get to expand was the Winchester Expanding Point (which expanded to about ~.44 caliber!..but it being the only one out of about 20 tested to expand at all) and the Speer Gold Dot in this caliber failed.

I can not speak specifically to the Bauer, but I find that many have a tendency to make categorical statements like 'this or that gun sucks' due to either personal or second-hand experience. Truth be told, there's a lemon to be found in every lot of everything produced everywhere in the world. IMO, that does not translate into 'all-inclusive.' At the same time, there will be cases whereby one does not care for a particular vendor whereas others will swear by them...Variety is the spice of life or so they say.

As I said two posts up, here are the results:
The Hornady XTP in this caliber penetrated four paper orange juice cartons and fully expanded. There was no "hydrostatic shock" (as in the first carton "popping")..go figure.
The S&B FMJ load performed alright. Penetrated three orange juice cartons and 2 milk jugs. The S&B ball had a different profile then the other FMJ's I've tested in this caliber, it looks more like a 9mm FMJ with that sharper profile. According to brassfetcher's gel test of this round it tumbled more than others (which is good imo) resulting in less penetration.
I also tested a Federal Hydra-Shok 110g in 38 Special from a derringer. Stopped in the third jug and expanded wider than the Critical Defense I tested. If anybody cares enough I could put pics up.

Pyro,

I would very much like to see the pics.

This thread inspired me to get out my Dad's old Bauer and do a little shooting. After 12 rounds a tiny little pin was sticking out the back. It's springy. I could push it in but it popped right back out.

Any ideas?

Can you post a pic?

Ya'...

I could tell you that the little pistol is hopelessly busted and that you should throw the junker away - in my direction of course.

Or I could say that it's the cocking indicator. When the firing pin is cocked, and the chamber likely loaded, you can see and feel the indicator pin sticking out. If you pull the trigger when the chamber is empty - be sure an empty magazine is in place - the pin will disappear. ;)

Why? Because I can. Never carried, not a nightstand gun. However, it is fun to shoot and I got it used and have put 1000 rounds thru it without a failure. I can put one between the eyes at 30' if needed. Did I mention it is fun to shoot? Maybe some people have and shoot .25ACP guns because they are fun at the range. If ammo was cheaper I'd take it every range trip but the .25ACP round is too expensive to justify it. Too bad, these little guns have their place in history and have been around for a long time.

Ok, here ya go. All of my .25 acp tests:
Glaser Safety Slug, 3/7 failed to fragment.

Winchester Expanding Point, expanded when it felt like it.

Recovered Speer Gold Dot next to Hornady XTP

And here's the W-XP next to a Federal 110 grain Hydra-Shok fired from a derringer.

Very interesting indeed as ballistic testing absent pictures is hard to interpret (ambiguous at best). Thanks much!
