For those who use 150gr pills in their 270 Winchester...just curious what recipes you use. Of course, standard "reduce and work up" will apply, just looking for some references.

I have H4831SC, RL-17, H380, Varget and W760 powders, and the rifle is a Savage 110 with 22" 10 twist barrel and the bullet is 150gr GameKing.

I realize your looking for a 150 grain bullet. I have had great experiences with the hornady 130 grain sst. It seems to be a good bullet and is very accurate in my savage 110, plus you will pick up some speed with it. It has plenty of knock down power for deer or game of that size

I've tried both H380 and H4831SC.

Both performed quite well in our Remington 700's, but the H380 worked best in my son's Ruger.

We load H380 in 130 gr Sierra BT for most applications. 150 gr. Sierra BT for elk.

Our load data is out in the shop. If you want specifics, let me know.

From the Hodgdon book on reloading...
IMR 4831 (Starting Load) 46.3 grains, 2498 velocity, 40,500 CUP
IMR 4831 (Max Load) 52.9 grains, 2815 velocity, 50,300 CUP

This with Hornaday SP bullets, 24" barrel, 1-10 twist, trim: 2.530", Winchester case and LR primers...

P.R.

I like RL19, H1000, and IMR-4350 in that order. Have loaded many, many rounds with those powders and the results were excellent with regard to both accuracy, and velocity.

I always used one of the 4831's with the 270 win but after trying R-22 with 150 gr. bullet's it's all I will use anymore with the 140's or the 150's. Try the R-22 you will not be sorry.

I've got a pretty accurate load with 150 g nosler partitions in my 22" rem 700. 54.5 grains os h4831sc. It's only 2625fps though.

Thanks folks; I've got a ladder ready to go from 54.0 up to 58.5gr in 0.5gr increments and will start fine-tuning based on that.

I'm not a huge velocity nut; as long as I know the drop and can hit where I'm aiming, that's all I care about.

I am working on just about the same thing

I am working up my recipe for a .270 Win handload. This will be my deer hunting load.

I am using 150gr BTSP

Powder is H4831SC

I loaded up 17 rounds like this

5 @ 54 grains (1 foul)
4 @ 55 grains
4 @ 56 grains
4 @ 57 grains

I figure I will shoot these in groups of 4 and pick the best one.

Then load up again with groups closer to my pick from the first trip. to get my load.

So I am interested in your results...also I am using a Savage 110 FCSS. So we even have the same rifle.

I hope to shoot mine on Thursday. I will post my results. Please do the same.

Good Luck

So fellas how did those tests go?

I am currently getting ave 2925 fps from Hornady 150g SSTs with a load of AR2209 which is identical to H4350. 1.2 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yds.

The load is above published max recommended but there are no pressure signs at all.

With the 150gr bullets I have only shot the Hornady RN through mine. quite a few years back I worked up a load simply as I had two full boxes of them given to me. I used a medium charge of IMR 4350, with them and the load was super accurate, drilling the 3/4" spot on the target time and time again out to 200yds. Recoil was nothing short of comfortable, and they resulted in many feral hogs demise.

Since then, I have used the 130's as a primary load but I DO keep two full boxes of the 150's loaded and ready for when I head out in the fall looking for hogs.

I would also try and work some loads up with magnum primers. You can't go wrong with the powders mentioned here. I shot alot of deer with Hornady 140 gr BTSP. Now I'm really getting great groups with Nosler Accubounds. Good luck I'll bet you won't have to tinker much. Let us know how it went. I haven't had the desire to shoot lately with this heat wave.

Been loading for the .270 win. for a very long time and can't really find a better combination than the Speer 130 gr. HCBT and RL19. The trade off with the 150 gr. bullet just isn't enough in my opinion to justify 20 more grains of bullet. I've taken elk, bear, deer, and antelope with the 130 gr. at some pretty extended distances without any indication that 130 gr. is too light. And as someone else refrenced above, the gain in velocity is significant with the 130 gr. and that transforms into energy and deeper penetration with the right bullet. Many will argue bigger is better but this isn't particularly true. Each Cartridge has an optimum performing bullet weight for that cartridge, and the 130 gr. is that for the .270 win..

I have concerns that the 130g (using Hornady SSTs at the mo') at 3100fps may not hold together well on close shots, whereas the 150g at 2900fps is more moderate at impact.

I thought about going to 130g Accubond or Interbonds, however they cost about double of the SSTs and plain old Interlocks. Same for the TSX etc.

The accuracy of the 150 in my rifle is similar if not quite as good as the 130. Only marginal.

Edit: I might add I use it mainly for feral pigs which as you'd be aware range from little fellas to big hard mud encrusted buggers, that might only present their rear end departing at a rate of knots because you have nearly stepped on them when stalking long grass or swampy areas.

I've been loading the 150 sierra boat tail for over 25 years with the following:

51.5 grains IMR 4350
CCI LR 200 primer
RP brass

It's MOA so I don't really care what it cronies.

I never could get the 130's to get under MOA, close but, 1.5 wasn't to my liking.

I will give an update as well..I had a ladder of
5 @ 54 grains (1 foul)
4 @ 55 grains
4 @ 56 grains
4 @ 57 grains

I shot them ...gave a few minutes to cool between each...and to be honest...the 55,56, and 57 all had excellent groups..I really think that they each performed the same at 100 yards.... so I ended up loading about 50 rounds at 55. I went lower on the scale because I want to have my wife do some shooting practice before deer season. I really think I would need a better scope and a longer distance to be able to see which group fits best.

another thing I did that I think made a difference was to buy an OAL guage and got closer to the lands than my factory rounds

G'day Brainwake I did a similar test yesterday with the same powder and the 150g SST.

I went a little higher than you, there were no pressure signs and the most accurate load is giving me 2925 on the chrony and grouping 5 shots under 1.2 inches.

Better still it shoots to the exact point of impact for my other best accuracy load using AR2209 (H4350), while my 130g grain loads are only about .5 inch higher, so I am happy.

Bob In my rifle using a magnum primer tightened up my groups. You say you like the 130 gr bullets. I can get a great great group in mine with 130 Accbond, Win brass, CCi magnum Primer, and 59 grs of H4831sc.
