Hi all. I'm in the market for a reasonably priced (new) standard 30-06 length action to re-barrel for a project. I've got a short action rifle I can use as partial trade so up to around $550 msrp is my max.
An affordable mild custom is my goal here. The finished rifle will probably end up being auctioned off (after I have some fun with it) to help an out of work friend with his medical bills.

*For those who care he was recently diagnosed with stage 3 small cell lung cancer, so he's got a long road ahead.

Do I really have to reply to my own thread to try to draw a little interest from my fellow THR members??

Sometimes threads get lost in the forum vortex. Any type of action you perfer? You can get new ruger 77 synthetic Hawkeye for like $469 and pull the barrel. The 280rem is cheaper then the 3006. Well the barrel, I'd be interested in. And re barrel. You can get Remington and savage actions for under $500

I've had a smattering of different rifle actions, although most of them have been non mauser types because they tend to be cheaper. I was kicking around the possibility of a Mossberg or maybe a Ruger American if barrels are out there without a ton of wait time.

I think the Mossberg and ruger American are fine as is, but can run into problems later on. Short chamber barrels are available, so not much need for barrel nuts. Get what you like.

If your doing your own work then nutted barrels are a good place to start. less tools and easier to fix a screw up. If your paying for it nearly anything will work well.

Pile of savages @horsey300 dug up and posted in another thread.

Ruger American rifles are pretty easy to source and a decent starting point. Just remember there is less aftermarket support, especially for the long actjons.
The Americans also us a 1-16 barrel threading, so they are useful for a doing an "AGE" set up on a number of different actions, including ruger 77s, and winchester 70/670 pushfeeds.
Most makers can make you an american barrel, shaw and Mcgowan being two of the cheaper options, along with a few smaller shops.

For the Patriot, I dont know the thread sizing, but if you pull your barrel and send it in, any of the barrel shops should be able to duplicate it.

My most recent project is going to be based on an American Magnum, but depending on what features you want on the rifle i might suggest a savage, or other more traditional action. What specifics do you want from the gun?

This thread says .30-06 length, what chamber are we aiming for when it's all said and done?

I'm sorry, most folks don't get a new gun, and re-barrel it. They just get a rifle with the barrel they want, in the first place, or
re-barrel a shot out barrel.
I'd say check your local pawn shops, there's plenty of 30.06s out there, which only see a hunting season or two, If that would be new enough, you might get a price break. (or in the case of "museum pawn shops", maybe not)

Here are some items you may want to consider

First is a DWM for under $200.

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/867106233

The next two are Zastava, ZCZ, but this guy perpetually lists them as CZ. Not a big deal as long as you're aware what you're looking at.

With single non-adjustable trigger.

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/867020333

With adjustable twin set trigger system.

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/867019778

Another seller with I think single adjustable trigger

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/865282128

Inexpensive barreled action you could sell the barrel after removal.

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/867290393

Inexpensive magazine and trigger guard to use with above action, looks like fixed magazine floorplate

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/867209369

Best of luck for your friend, I battled non-small cell lung cancer about 4 years ago, so far so good for now for me.

Why do you keep showing me these lol. Not to bad for the 08 Brazilian.

From a simplicity perspective, I would put another vote in for Savage as they are very easy to swap barrels on, and you can very often find used barrels on ebay or other website from people doing the same things.
With simple tools you can even do the work yourself, including headspacing.

There are some differences in the 110 actions that you would want to be aware of, but if all you are doing is swapping a barrel, and not the stock, then you don't need to worry about it.
If it is going to be auctioned off, I would say the 110 action would demand a higher price point than the cheaper Axis action. But both are perfectly functional.

But if you have the means one of those surplus actions would be fun...
