30-30 cartidge for elk?

Using a .30-30 for elk is nuts, unless you really, really need the meat. Borrow a decent rifle or spend $300 at Walmart for a Savage .30-06.

BTW, I have shot a .460 Weatherby. I can't say it was pleasant.
 
My Great Grandpa use his 30-30 to shoot many elk, but I don't think I would do the same. Not unless I could't buy or borrow another rifle.

Same here. I'd do it if that was all I had, but I'd be scheming to have a different rifle next year.

The .460 fits the old Mountain Man's definition of "loaded for bear" -- "When you're more afraid of the gun then you are of the bear." :neener:
