.30 Remington AR, any good for whitetails?

I have heard of great results on deer within 300 yards with the 30 Rem AR cartridge, but it seems like it is less common each year. It just hasn't caught on like some other AR rounds.

I think that the Winchester Power Point 64gr has a good record on whitetails within 200 yards. I know a guy who uses the Federal Fusion 62gr. and he killed four nice sized deer with his AR last season. He said that the farthest one was about 150 yards.

I don't know how it would do with white tales, but it should be a decent round for whitetail deer or smilar sized animals.

If legal in your state I wouldn't hesitate to use a 223 on any deer, whitetail or mule deer, with any quality 60 gr or heavier softpoint that shot well in my gun. This would be a good application for the Barnes TTSX bullets if you want to spend the money for them.

A properly loaded 223 will easily kill any deer, but it is a close range gun. Most close range weapons such as bows, muzzle loaders, handguns, etc. are limited by their ability to hit at longer ranges more than the power to cleanly take animals. You can get into trouble with a 223 because it is easy to make hits at ranges far greater than the round has the energy to get the job done. On small Georgia deer I'd take a 150-200 yard shot. On larger deer in other parts of the country I'd cut that range in half. And I wouldn't use it on any thing larger than deer, pronghorn, or similar sized game.

I have seen 55 grain FMJ absolutely devastate large hogs with much thicker hide and shields. All you have to do is hit both lungs or head/neck and it is lights out. You will get into trouble with marginal shots so practice a ton and dont shoot past 200 yards.

No.
The 6.8 SPC came out in 2002, six years before the .30 Rem AR.

The 6.8 is based on the old .30 Remington case.

The .30 Rem AR came out in 2008 and is based on the .450 Bushmaster, which in turn was based on the .284 Winchester, which in turn was based on the .308 Winchester.

Oh, that's where I got it confused. Was thinking the .30 rem was a .30 rem. forgot totally about .30 rem AR. Thanks for setting that straight.

You may have to roll your own if you go the 30 AR route. Remington already dumped its R15 in the 30 ar. CDNN investments bought all of them and sell for $799 to the general public on closeout.

Dude killed a speed goat in American Hunter @ 300 yards. Look. If you have to ask you probably shouldn't be hunting.

:scrutiny:

If he has to ask whether folks think 30 Rem AR is a good Whitetail round he probably shouldn't hunt? You lost me there, better to ask and learn than sit and wonder.

Just from the 30 AR's specs, I always thought it would make an excellent AR hunting round for deer/hogs. Sadly, it doesn't seem to have caught on, and I'd bet money Big Green is planning on letting it bite the dust. You can always look at other, more popular AR rounds like the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 450 Bushmaster and 458 SOCOM to name a few. 6.8 is probably the most popular, but 6.5 seems to be gaining ground as well.

Plenty of folks use a .223, I don't think I'd be comfortable doing it, but if you are and its legal in your state, go for it.

It seems to me the .30 Rem R15 was DOA.

They had no ammo for them for two years after it was introduced, and it is still in very short supply.

BTW & FYI the 284 Win is NOT "based on the .308 Win". The 284 Win has a rebated rim(.473) which is the same as a .308 while the case is larger ahead of the extractor groove.
The 30AR was born a loser and is destined to be an orphan in the near future regardless of it's attributes(if it has any). If you really need/want a .308, get an AR10.
The .223 is a VERY marginal deer round and contributes to many wounded and lost animals yearly. Yes, it WILL kill a deer and I started several kids out with it but that doesn't make it a good deer cartridge. A Ford Ranger will pull a fairly big trailer some of the time but, sooner or later, you're going to wish you had more weight and horsepower.

Why not neck the 30 Rem AR down to 24 or 25? Would it fit in standard AR-15? What would the ballistics be?

.243 and .25 Winchester Super Short Magnums could be loaded for AR-15 lengths. Those would be a pretty close equivalent. Both of those are basically dead ends right now

Yup, the .30 Rem AR was stillborn. I think you would have better luck with one of the WSSM cartridges. Check out http://www.dtechuppers.com/

.25 WSSM would be my choice for deer, but the .243 WSSM or .300 WSSM/OSSM would do just fine too.

Gotta toss my vote for the 6.8spcII...... but the 6.5 Grendel and .300 Blackout have got my attention as of late for deer hunting... decisions decisions....

... 6.5 Grendel... must have had a lapse there... yeah, that would be on my short list too.

And to the .450 Bushmaster is a cartridge of it`s own, it is not based on the .284 Win............
