300 Savage for Texas hunting??? Opinions Please

I plan on moving to Houston this summer and the only hunting I have done has been in good old Alabama. I have a nice savage 99 in 300 savage that was given to me by a family friend who had the biggest gun collection that I have ever seen.Anyways he gave it to me and sadly died a few years later. Its got a brand new leupold 2x7 on it and its a pretty acurate gun.


My question is for a hunting gun in Houston area, is a 300 savage a decide caliber to use, or do I need to upgrade? All opinions are welcome and appreciated.thanks

No, seriously, the .300 Savage may well be one of the most overlooked, underrated deer guns ever. To top it off, the Savage model99 is considered by many packers to be the world's finest saddle gun. If you like it and can shoot, for cryin' out loud, HUNT WITH IT. But I will be happy to send you my address....
 
If you're going to be hunting the Big Thicket to the Coastal Plains, you'll do just fine with a .300 Savage.

There are lots of places where you'll never see a 300 yard shot while hunting. In some places, a clear 30 yard shot will be tough enough. Your Model 99 is just the thing for this area because it allows a fast follow-up shot in the scrub. Just remember to wipe it down regularly whether you use it or not. I've seen PVC rust in Houston.

I have my Grandpa's M99-R. It was good enough for Black Bear, Elk, Cougar and anything else he hunted here in Oregon. Your set-up should be great for Texas and most anywhere else for that matter.

Nope totally disagree, the savage 99 sucks and the 300 is so totally overrated that I have gone on a personal campaign to remove all i find in the market place. There is no redeeming socail or practical value of the gun and you need to let me rid the shooting world of this travesty and send it me ASAP. I will reward you with a nice plastic stocked 700 adl
 
I always thought it was insane for the US to develope the .308/7.62x51 NATO when the .300 Savage was right there and waiting and already fit the requirements of the .308, indeed somewhat better than the .308. In Houston, the .300 will do absolutely everything you need. There isn't an animal in Texas or Louisiana that the .300 Savage would be considered too weak to take. And, while you are at it you'll be doing so with a classy rig.

I poked around on the ballistic charts a bit, and the .300 Savage is very close to the .308 with matching bullets. .308 had about 190 FPS muzzle velocity advantage with the same 150-gr bullet (Remington PSP core-lokt ammo).

More "oomph" than the .30/30,and better long-range, too, with the higher ballistic coefficient "pointy" ammo.

.300 Savage 150 Gr PSP 2630 FPS 2300 " " " "
.308 Win 150 Gr PSP 2820 FPS 2650 " " " "

That .300 Savage is probably too much on rabbits, though . . . :p

Only reason to make a 308 was to retain the shoulder angles and neck length of the 30-06, the neck on a 300 sav and the shoulder angles are to short and steep to handle the impact of machine gun cycling gracefully. All of the geometry of feeding had been worked out and the engineers decided that shortening the round but keeping the angles was best way to ensure smooth operation of auto or semi weapons. Also the short neck led to bullet setback with combined with the higher operating temps of full autos led to bullets getting shoved too deep in the case and pressures skyrocketing.
 
As these gentlemen have stated, the Savage 99 is a great rifle and the .300 Savage is a good cartridge........a lot of folks take elk with it.
I have three Savage model 99's and wish I had more, they are..
.303 Savage
.300 Savage
.243 Win.
 
Unless you plan on 400 yards shots, the .300 Savage will take anything alive in Texas, and do it in style. Even factory fodder pushes a 150 grain bullet over 2600 fps, and good handloads will top 2800.
No flys on a Model 99 Savage, or the scope.
Golly I wish I owned one like that.

I've been using the Model 99 in 300 Savage for 25 years (+/-)
Does great on deer, hogs, varmints etc.
Granddad used it before me...always worked for him too.

Great round in a dang fine gun.

Savage 99 is an excellent rifle... it put the U in ugly, but a fine firearm. If you find that you're wanting to shoot really long ranges, buy another rifle. But by all means, keep the 99.
 
There are two polar bears in the Smithsonian. Do a little research on how they were collected, who shot them, and the gun and caliber they were taken with.

With the possible exception of Griz, in the hands of a competant hunter, .300 Savage is adequate for any game in North America.
 
my bro in san antonio inherited our grandfathers .300 savage 99 ( he's oldest but eventually i will get our other grandfathers 99) in < 1 year hes taken pigs, a really nice 8 point white tail, a blackbuck, and a 4-500 lbd cow meat elk. all were one shot kills. our grandfather killed black bear and all kinds of deer in PRK with it for 50 years.

i dont think you will be undergunned at all. if you can find one get one in .308 as factory hunting ammo has more choices than factory hunting ammo in .300 sav in .300 sav you pretty limited to 150 or 180 softpoints. but if you reload, its basically the same as .308

My dad has a mod 99 that breaks down and excepts a 410 shotgun barrel. Made for a nice camp gun. He used it for elk and deer when he and grandpa went hunting in Wyoming. Great rifle. You will be happy with it.
 
A terrific cartridge in a truly great lever action rifle. Excellent deer rifle and cartridge. Enjoy and good hunting.
 
Wow, my old savage 99 thread! I posted this about three years ago and I guess I should report in that I was lucky to go hunting in Bandaras and took a rather nice 8 point with my old 99. I havent been able to hunt lately, as its getting harder and harder to find a lease and more expensive.

I will never sell this gun and it will always be my favorite.
 
Know about that expensive hunting, so I do most of mine with relatives in La, Miss, or Ga.

I lucked into a nice 99 in 300 Savage at a gun show about 16 months ago. It also had a Weaver K 4 with dot reticule and is one nice combo. I have not shot it much but do like it very much, and would not feel underguned anywhere in the SE. USA.

I went to the Houston Reliant gun show back in Jan. I was there for almost 5 hours and I saw everything there was to be seen. I saw one Savage 99 at the entire show! They are great guns especially if they have a little history behind them, mine was made in 1950 and was a hunting rifle for an old timer up in Maine/New Hampshire in the 1960s.
 
My 300 Sav, loves the Hornady 150 Gr. SST & RL-15, 1" 5 shot groups at 100 Yds is average I need to shoot it more than I do.
