What do you load with the Hornady 300g hollowpoint XTP bullet in 45 caliber. Is it meant to be a hunting bullet? Is it meant to be reloaded in 45 long colt or in in 45ACP? It would make one heck of a large self defense bullet in 45ACP but Im not sure if you can load it because none of my loading books list a recipe for something so heavy. What is the deal with this bullet?

I've used it in a 45 Colt load for my Blackhawk. Good accuracy and quite a whallop.

There are two XTP's in 300, one for lower velocities in 45 Colt(has two cannelures) and the Magnum version (single cannelure) for the 454 velocities only.

Dual cannelures allow seating in the forward one for Colt length rounds, and if you can deal with the extended length you can gain some powder capacity by seating and crimping in the rearward one.

Definately hunting bullets and NOT for the ACP.

If you shoved that log into an ACP case, it probably wouldn't feed.
Assuming it did, the limited case capacity would either reward you with velocities around 400 fps or a kaboom.

As much as I like the 1911, I wouldn't attempt using that bullet. However, I did stuff some into the 45 Colt last night.
I've also got a 460 that would launch 'em real purty.

I will say that they make GREAT self defense loads. The trouble with that is the range is rather limited with most sling shots. :)

I load the 300gn. XTP/Mag's for my .460 . The regular 300gn. XTP's tend to ''explode" on impact with .460 velocities and are(as mentioned earlier) more suited for lower velocities.
