Here's my 3 shot group today, 200 yards. I was prone, with a forend rest. I'm very pleased with this, I just have to go about 2 clicks right. The rifle is a Remington 700 SPS Tactical, I love it!

Yeah, there's really no excuse for not doing a 5-shot group when you've got a rifle that was built to be accurate.

That's a pretty rad lookin' rifle, btw!

I ordered all my reload stuff this last week.. Give me the specs on you reloads.. I will be using 168 smk's .. I shot this week end too.. I might send mine off and have the barrel threaded for a brake.. I am also thinking of picking this same rifle up in 223.. I love it:D

I forgot to mention the load, here it is:

168 gr Matchking
42.3 grains H-4895
Remington Case
Remington Primer
COL = 2.800"

I also trim my cases to 2.010"

I'm not posting my first 3 groups, they were awefull, lol.

where are you getting your reloading supplies right now.. Pm me if it is online and they have it in stock LOL:D

Hey,

That group looks good. I personally like to shoot 3 shot groups as that is what every one is doing in most of the major reviews. This allows me to compare my file to what other guns are currently grouping. I also tend to clean the barrel after every 3 shots when I am breaking it in for the 1st 30 shots.

I agree with shooting 3 round shot groups. Most gun manufactures base there 1 moa warrenty on three rounds at 100 ys. There is nothing wrong with shooting a 5 round group to push the limits. Up until the mid to late 80's a 1 moa rifle was talked about but not really ever seen. A few exceptions yes I am talking about a hunting rifle platform here. Now there are some that will in fact shoot sub-MOA but still a precious few. I think if you are wanting sub moa 5 shot groups your setting yourself up to be let down. That is starting to ask alot.

A test of factory rifles I was reading I think in field and stream put 14 NIB rifles going in price from $400-$900 dollars. Resulted in 8 of them shooting under a inch group on average. Out of the 35 or so rifles I have there are 3 that can do it. Seems like we are getting way out there on expectations from a factory gun. Just my .02

I highly disagree! One of the main benefits of reloading is the ability to find a really accurate load that your rifle likes. A modern bolt action with decent optics should be able to shoot sub-MOA (at 100,200 or 300 yards) without too many problems using handloads. I shoot 5 shot groups for all my bolt actions and so far only have one rifle that's been difficult to get an average group size under 1MOA (it's a Remington 700 6mm), but I finally found a load that will do it. I admit it's harder with the larger calibers with sporter weight barrels, patience helps.

Sub moa is not uncommon at all.. good ammo makes alot of soso rifles real good.. here is my sub moa 5 shot group with my 700 sps tactical

I agree with you sir if you are handloading it makes a huge diffrence. I am just thinking that to many people are beng led to beleive. You can walk into Dicks, Walmart, wherever and pick up a rifle and a cheap box of ammo and expect to get sub moa groups. Yes I have a couple rifles that I always got so-so accuracy with factory and switched to handloads and saw a dramatic improvment. The best thing I have ever bought was a OAL gauge. On top of handloading trigger time is very important also in getting those groups.

Here's the but. Alot of people don't handload, I have met a lot of dummies that think bore-sighting takes the place of sighting in a scope. Have seen countless people wanting to return a rifle because someone said they could get sub-moa accuracy out of the box. You look and they are buying the cheapest ammo money can buy. With good factory ammo I stand by my claim that I own three rifles that can shoot those kinds of groups. With handloads the number goes to 8-9. If you go to 5 shot groups the number is 6.

That is a strong group!

Sub moa is not uncommon at all

Well, it's all relative, as Einstein might have said, had he been a gun nut. On an absolute (and theoretical scale), no, a rifle shooting sub-1-MOA is not uncommon. On a scale relative to how much it is claimed on this here intarwebz, it's very, very uncommon, I would surmise.

I'm a little confused. I've seen and shot the Rem 700 at 300 yds a lot and those rifles are deadly accurate. The ones I've shot consistently keyhole. I use Hornady 168gn BTHP, 41.3 gns Varget and WLR primers, the cases were GGG's.
The rifles are all LE sniper rifles. The only difference between yours and theirs is 12" suppressor screwed onto the muzzle.

I don't reload.. I have been running factory match ammo off the shelf.. I just now bought my press for reloading..

I will stick with what I have said.. A sub moa rifle is not uncommon.. Hell my 700 sps tactical cost me less than $600 and is sub moa, My tikka cost less than that and is sub moa, My savage is sub moa.. And all of these are with factory match ammo off the shelf.. I am not trying to start a fight or anything but they are common for sure

I posted a pic of my 700 sps above.. that group was shot the second day I shot it with alot of wind.. I used 168 grain federal gold medal match.. that same rifle with the cheapest ammo I could find for breaking in the barrel had groups 2.5 times as large at the same distance.. So if you buy the cheap ammo then there are few guns out there that will shoot sub moa.

I just started shooting 308 too. I have had a few 1MOA 3 round groups.

I prefer three round groups because the 4th and the (if the fourth was good) 5th shot put what I believe to be undue stress on my vibe, as it were. Harshin' my mellow.

I swear I can shoot two or three 3 round groups out of five tries but not one 5 round group in a row.

PS. That 700 is sweet looking, Mr Redneck. I am pretty jealouse.

3 shot touching groups are fine. 4 shot touching groups are great. 5 shot touching groups are rare :banghead:
My fav .308 load is 168 SMK over 41.0 gr. Reloder 15 w/ CCI BR primers in Lake City Match brass.

I love the "I don't do 5 shots because they're hard"

You ever stop to consider that 3 shot groups are useless because they're simply too easy to luck into. The OP even admits to as much in a later post

I'm not posting my first 3 groups, they were awefull, lol.

Cherry picking you favorite group out of FOUR doesn't tell us or the rest of the internet anything useful at all.

Now I'm not picking on the OP, he's rightfully proud of his new shootin iron and his ability to use it. But I'm sick and tired of all the tall tales where someone shoots ONE sub whatever 3 shot group and then proclaims from then on out how their rifle is a sub MOA performer "all day long"

I like shooting 5 shot groups, some like shooting 3 shot groups, Some like 10.. Who really cares.. Just get out and shoot.. Have a good time.. try and get a friend into shooting.. :)

I may have to look into one of the SPS tact rifles after seeing those groups. I only have two remmington rifles at the moment. A 700 BDL in 8mm mag, and a 700 CDL in .260 rem that I picked up off a buddy. Neither one are all to impressive as far as accuracy goes. The .260 is off getting a jewell trigger installed and glass bedded. It shoots 2 to 2 1/2 MOA on average seems pretty bad for the price.

I do shoot 5 shot groups with a good rifle that has proven to me to be accurate. Although I agree with Krocus that it is a lot harder to get a clean 5 shot group than it is a 3. I will often times get a flyer on the 5th. Still within a couple inches of the group but a flyer none the least.
