HK91s and similar rifles have horrible ergonomics. It's something to consider.

The Spanish CETME is the rifle the HK91/G3 was based on. It's interesting to note that the HK91 would never have been made if FN had been willing to sell the equipment to make G1s in Germany.

HK91s and similar rifles may have horrible ergonomics for some, but not all ... personally I like the HK-91 and it fits me very well. There is a reason its the #2 Battle rifle in world (or was at one time).

At the time it was #2, the #1 Battle Rifle was the FN FAL ... which for me had horriable ergonomics and didn't fit me at all.

Fortunately for us all, a whole new family of battle rifles has become available!

Yep. It was cheap and reliable.

Doesn't change the horrible ergos (most HK firearms have had terrible ergos: that's just started to change in the very recent past), the bad balance, or the way it chews brass.

What you get in building your own is exactly what you want without wasting money in the form of buying a complete rifle and later changing out parts. The difficulty comes in knowing what you want to begin with; most of us end up reconfiguring or building other rifles as our needs or desires evolve.

Having said that, at the very least, you save the FET paid on complete firearms when you build your own. If you do so with a complete upper, you honestly do not need any special tools for assembling the lower (receiver extension nut can be installed without the special wrench). Putting one together will also help give you a better understanding of the platform.

As I mentioned before, if one of the PSA rifle kits offers what you're looking for, they cannot be beat for value. You get the rifle kit, then a stripped lower (that's the actual gun, the part that has to go through an FFL), and put it together. The rifle I showed, had I opted for a more basic lower and just used the included M4 style stock and grip, could have been put together for ~$900 including shipping and transfer fees. The rifle kit cost me $737 shipped, and PSA regularly has "blem" lowers for $75. Add $10 shipping on the lower plus FFL transfer fee (typically $20-$40). Last time I saw it in stock, that kit had gone up $80 from what I paid, but still a screamin' deal. The MI handguard alone is a $200 piece.

Alternately, if you don't like the offerings in full kits, you buy an assembled upper of your choosing (be sure to know whether it includes the bolt carrier group or not), and then either buy an assembled lower, or a stripped lower + lower build kit.

One of the reasons the AR is so popular is the ability of just about anyone to assemble from parts or reconfigure with minimal knowledge, experience and tools. The barrel extension design means that there is no messing with headspace when installing/changing barrels. They are plug-n-play. That is the biggest hang-up with most other designs, including the FAL, M1A and G3/CETME; barrel changes require more equipment and much more knowledge/experience to be done and done correctly.

Sorry been MIA quite some time. Thank you for response. I just bought a Core15 TAC 111 5.56 got a killer deal. As far a building my own i think for what i paid 1100 USD not bad plus the lifetime warranty.

Do yourself a favor and buy a PTR-91 GI. Here is mine:

Extremely reliable and rugged, very accurate. Would make a perfect gun to carry on a yacht to dissuade pirates or boarders. 20 round magazines can be had for as low as $4 now, parts are cheap and available, there are numerous accessories, they are just awesome guns, and made in the USA... oh, and you can find them for about $800-$900. They are unbeatable for that price IMHO.

I too have PTR91, similar to the model above, but with a rail and thinner forend. This is a battle rifle. RUGGED, German design, made in the USA and available for $900. Uprated recoil buffer makes this rifle a joy to shoot. No fiddle-twaddle gas system. If it chambers, it shoots. I have put @ 1200 rounds through mine with one FTE - a 3 times reload with a dodgy rim that shouldn't have made the cut.

I have a Swift 1.5-4.5x 21 Scope on it. With PPV 147 gr FMJ and with handloads (yes you can reload PTR91 brass 2 - 3 times, even after the mangling it gets being ejected) 147 gr FMJ milsurp bullets over IMR4064, it will regularly shoot 1.5" - 2", 5 shot groups at 100 yards. With premium bullets, this could be a consistent 1.5 MOA rifle. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
