Ok so here is the story, I really want a functional .308 battle rifle. My first choice would be a Springfield M1A1 or a Springfield Scout Squad, however I don't have $2500 to drop on a gun at the moment. I've been eye balling the DPMS LR-308 Classic as a possible alternative but my question is this: Is the M1A1 significantly more accurate/reliable than the AR style DPMS? And is there some sort of scope that would allow me to use the iron sights and/or the scope on the DPMS? I'm looking to be able to reach up to 400 yards with this gun as I already have the carbine field covered. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Accuracy is the other way around, usually the AR is more accurate over the M1/M14, that is why they took over the service rifle matches. They also have quick detachable scope mounts and back up iron sights (BUIS) for the AR platforms. It is definitely an improvement over earlier (M1A1) designs. Although, I do like the looks of the M1A1 a lot more.

I am absolutely in love with the looks of the M1A1. I'm just worried about them being pulled from the market before I am able to save enough to afford one. The "woman" has expressed jealousy at how often I boot up a picture of a nice M1A1 with wood furniture and stare at it. Its almost as pretty as she is.

I'm not real familiar with many of the DPMS models but I know their SASS version gets HUGE praise as being incredibly accurate. I have heard claims of everything from 1/4" to 1/2" groups at 100 yards with a good shooter, good scope, and some FGMM and handloads. I don't know how that relates to their Classic model but I have heard great things from their SASS and would think in capable hands it would match most any M1A1 if not shoot better.

Now if the wood stock calls you there isn't much to do but listen.

i think they are pretty close. the ar platform lends itself to great accuracy, and ive seen them many times at the range hovering right around 1 moa. they are fantasticly accurate.

im not familiar with the exact model your referring to but if it has a carry handle you can get the little rai for it and have a scope on that and still see under it for the irons.

im like you, if i could choose between the two, i would go for the springfield, but i think the ar type 308's are great too.

Well if you have not gotten the memo yet it does not look like there will a ban attempt during this presidential term. Anyhow the M1A is legal in every state even in California (with the compensator opposed to a flash hider). So save your money and wait for the #'s in stock to increase and when the prices bottom out then pounce.
