If you can't get an M1A/M14, what else in .308?

A few more options, if you simply must have a semi-auto and aren't into the pseudo-military look.

Browning's BAR:

Remington's 742/7400:

H&K's SLB2000:

Of the above rifles, my choice would be the BAR. For help deciding, see generally "Browning BAR or Remington 7400 or ???"

AR10 type.

Hon. mentions to FAL of a quality build, PTR-91, and POF (GPAR type gun).

M14 type is a close 2nd choice for me behind AR10 type, ahead of those, though.

If money is no object, buy a nice M1A.

If you can find one, and money is a consideration, an AR10 is a damned fine rifle.

I have a carbine length AR10, and it shoots very well indeed out to a couple hundred yards.

In fact, it's lighter, and shoots just as well, so it has displaced my Rem 700 as my hunting rifle.

It ain't as pretty, but it is a damned fine shooter.

All of these suggestions are good ones.

Firearms choices are very personal. Some appeal and some don't appeal as much. Absent a very pressing and immediate need for a weapon, take your time and save your money, and buy what you want. You may or may not be entirely happy with your purchase, but typically your impression of the firearm will be less biased than it is of a rifle that you bought because you couldn't get the one you wanted. Fewer "if only's."

I like the M14 type of rifle for its sights and accuracy. I like wood stocks. I don't like how that rifle fits me, and the hammering on my upper lip by the receiver dust cover. For me the G3 or clone works better, and is easier to shoot. --It is far from perfect, but with a few modifications it works acceptably, and fits me well.

Good luck on your purchase.

Didn't realized they imported any...new 2 me
Guess I am dating myself. :(

YES!

I bought an M1 Garand which had been completely rebuilt and converted to 7.62x51 NATO. It had VG GI wood, new springs, correctly rebuilt and fitted op rod and gas cylinder, a new commercial barrel and very well-done reParked finish. It works very nicely for me and cost less than half the then-current price for a new base model M1A or FAL.

If you can't get an M14/M1A, for whatever reason, I would opt for a good FAL, then a good HK roller lock clone like the PTR, then an AR-10, and then probably a Saiga conversion.

Well in theory the 5.56 model is out there already so I assume the 7.63 version will make it out too. The SCAR-H is still getting the bugs out I believe though. I'm sure any production at the moment is going towards fulfilling their military contracts.

Only .308 to this day I have ever really wanted is the DPMS SASS. A few bolt .308 rifles would be fun but the SASS is tits.
