oh and i just read post # 23, what about the synthetic stock? can you put that on there? what gun is that? make/model?

Price really isn't THAT important... unless I had to buy the gun tomorrow, but I am young and have time in my favor. I could just put away $3 a day and just have a great system in a few years....I plan to buy plenty of guns, but if I can start to narrow down what I want, and maybe even find what I want now, fine with me...

Basically I am trying to start to build my arms collection for whenever the "SHTF". I want to make sure that I have at least one gun that can fire every single popular round in the world (incase of evasion or invasion) ANYWAYS, as far as my personal sniper rifle, I wanted something that I could use to hunt, and defend (at distance) with. The sniper rifle I am looking for should have the following characteristics:

1. .308 winchester (NOT 7.62x51mm)
2. Detachable box Magazine (DBM)
3. 1 in 10 twist with a heavy, chrome lined barrel
4. bolt action
5. highly reliable in rugged conditions
6. accurate within 1-1.5 MOA
7. synthetic stock/make up
8. good stock set up (no need for big configuration)
9. good price
10. popular gun (replacement parts)

that is my order of priorities...

Drum roll please. . . . . . .

Here is the firearm to meet all of your demands.

M14/M1A

The only little, tiny problem is item #4.
Yes, it has a bolt, but, it has an 'gas assisted' bolt.:D

seeker1111,

The rifle that meets all your criteria (with the exception of the chrome-lined barrel) is the AI/AW. Using your savings plan of $3 per day, it should be all yours in about 5 years time.;) Good luck.

Don

Varmint

Buy a factory Varmint rifle
Tikka
CZ
Savage
Remington

The Tikka or CZ can be had with the box mag and pretty close to your price. Nice triggers too.

LOL... yeah i guess sometimes the way i think is kinda weird...

forgive me for going against traditional rifles, but the m14/m1a just... not for me... it looks semi-automatic, and with a 20rd mag, I'd think its a safe bet that it is... not to mention it looks like that crappy carbine of the m1 garand (yes the one that couldn't penetrate the chinese clothing) but I guess I am just bent on getting a remington 700 or now a savage 10... both are my ideal candidate...

FN SPR or PBR lineup will get you everything you listed, except the twist rate.

I have had excellent success with both of mine.

Wasn't aware that the M1 Carbine was made by Nerf. Good to know.

Since you have made it clear that you won't be running this gun much:
But seeing as is, I won't be firing hundreds, maybe even thousands of rounds through the sniper rifle (hopefully none) the chrome really is a luxury.

... well I gotta ask: What exactly are you going to train on?

Ummmmm. . . yeah. . . the M14/M1A is a semi-automatic.

Crappy carbine??? While I'm not a fan of the .30 carbine round, I do like the rifle design, very much. Nothing 'crappy' about it.
M1 Garand not penetrate chinese clothing?? That's a new one on me.

Moving on. . . The Savage is o.k. IF I were dead-set on a bolt action rifle, there is NOTHING wrong with the Remington 700 rifle.

Oh. . .and as for the 20 round magazines for the M1A, there are also 5 round and 10 round magazines available.

To each his own, I suppose. That's why they make vanilla and chocolate (and yes) even strawberry ice cream. Everyone doesn't like the same thing.

I've seen that one on the History channel a few times. I forget the show's name. They make a point about us adopting the 5.56x45mm round because, apparently, 30-06 has trouble with winter coats.

They really should put a THR member on retainer to make sure they don't bubble forth with such claims.

"...when Canada invades us..." That started long ago. Mary Pickford, "America's Sweetheart", was a Canadian. So are a lot of other Hollywood weenies. Canadian engineers put NASA on the moon. J.C. Garand was born in Canada too. When the rest of us come, we won't be carrying Lee-Enfields though. They haven't been used by the CF since the mid 50's. We'll bring our own beer too.
Scoping a bolt action rifle does NOT make it a sniper rifle. If you want the civilian equivilant, you won't get it cheap.
"...yes the one that couldn't penetrate the chinese clothing...30-06 has trouble with winter coats..." Nonsense. The internet myth is about the .30 Carbine, not the .30-06. It might take two rounds, but the .30 carbine works just fine as long as you don't use ball ammo.
"...All savage .308's are 1 in 10 I think..." Yep.
"...10. popular gun (replacement parts)..." If the SHTF, where do you think will you be able to get parts for a commercial hunting rifle?

Here are a few other to choose from.

Tikka T3 Varmint has everything you want. 1/11 twist.

CZ 550 Varmint also everything you want. but 1/12 twist.

Ruger M77MKII Target 1/10 twist. But no detachable magazine.

Ha

You are misinformed about a few things. Ignore what you see on television.

Both of these are 30 cals.

First off, I'd forget about the chrome lining. In fact, in most cases a non chromed barrel is more accurate.

I like DBMs, but I'd probably drop that from my requirement because it rules out a lot of nice rifles.

For the price you list, you're stuck with a factory varmint rifle. Nothing wrong with this because they shoot just fine. Tactical rifles are in some ways a marketing ploy (notice that they're more expensive).

Ok, If you read the post, I think he was referring to the M1 CARBINE. I don't think 30-06 has any trouble penetrating Body armor, let alone a winter coat...30 Carbine is a much lower power round...

The troll is strong in this one Obi Wan.

Most likely due to this:

Someone laying down "sniper rifle" specs like that, then questioning whether or not the M1A is semi-auto? Bizarre. Then confusion followed by a comment like a garand can't penetrate chinese clothing. HUH?

research

It definitely needs to be .308 WIN. While the 7.62x51 NATO is almost identical, firing a .308 bullet in a gun chambered for the 7.62 round can cause unnecessary stress on on the gun. Vice Versa is okay (this is similar to the .223 REM/ 5.56x45mm, except you should buy the gun chambered for the 5.56)
308 and 7.62x51 are interchangeable.

What are you planning to do? Shoot milk jugs?

Also, seeing as that your rifle budget is limited, what is your base/rings/scope budget? Those things are just as critical.

i'll get yelled at for this but, how about a DPMS 308? beside being bolt action and i think mines 1:9, it kicks ace. i constantly shoot sub MOA with a leupy VX-I 4-14X. plus who doesnt want 20rnds per mag when the SHTF neways...

begin the yelling and the mockery now!

p.s. with glass it was about 1250 all said and done

M14/M1A

Hmm the 4th requirement was bolt action, so how does this rifle meet all the demands?

Theres alot of good rifle choices. You might work well with a nice Remington 700 with say a leopard mildot scope.

Savage model 10 are quite nice too and would do the job for quite a bit cheaper.

CZ 550 or even for some more money a 750 would work very well.

Sakos would do the job quite well too.

Theres plenty of good bolt actions in .308 thats rugged and accurate enough to do the job.

We'll bring our own beer too.

When you 'up norte' get ready to do this, let me know. I want to get my White Flag ready!

I could live on Molson, Labatts and Moosehead :neener:

By the way, Canada has the best beaver ;)

Hmm

Is the Moosehead, Labatt, Molson, etc. that they sell in Canada any different than what I can buy in Kroger. Because it's okay. I think the Czechs have the beer thing down a bit better.

Step #1 would be to get a good bolt action .22 and shoot it until you can hit a nickel at 50 yards on demand. Then start thinking about a centerfire. It's pretty much guaranteed that you won't hit squat at 1000 yards without a good bit of practice.
