Professional guides in bear country carry 12 gauge pumps loaded with slugs and buck-shot. Good luck hitting a charging bear while you are wetting your pants.
Yeah...remember to file the front sight off!

I would certainly be willing to go a step down in power to ensure reliability. If you manage to break a shoulder or some other major bone and slow him down you might be able to get a reload managed. But then, if given the opportunity, try to shoot him in the nose.

Good luck.

Not sure if this is related, but I too have a revolver with extraction issues.
I sent it to S&W for repair & just today got a bill in the mail.

The repair order says:

REPAIR EXTRACTION (EXTRACTOR ALIGN)
TURN BBL (OPEN B&C)
RANGE TEST

Total $86.00

Not sure what #2 is, so I sent an email to S&W asking that & asking why it isn't covered under warranty.

(sorry, not looking to hi-jack this thread)

UPDATE:

S&W said:
The items needing repair are wear orientated, turn barrel closes the gap between the barrel and cylinder to the proper distance.

How did that Corbon 200gr Hardcast load work out? I bought a 20rd box and fired two shots of it through my Blackhawk. It seemed more controllable than the rme 125gr load I was used to.

extraction can be helped, get a brush chuck it in a cordless drill, and polish your cylinder, throw a little transmission fluid on the brush and it will lubricate polish and clean this helps my python with my full house loads.

With the prices of the specialty ammo you are buying like Buffalo Bore and DoubleTap it's going to be hard to practice. I really suggest trying that 180gr hard cast Federal ammo I mentioned above or one of the Remington offerings. The price is much more reasonable so you will be able to afford to practice. I do not recommend taking any ammo you don't practice with along for protecting your life.

the DoubleTap seems relatively cost effective
Sportsmansguide sells the Federal 180 gn Castcore; $25 for a box of 20, that's $1.25/round
DoubleTap direct is selling 200gn Castcore; $40 for a box of 50, that's $0.80/round
not trying to be an advertisement for DoubleTap, I just thought the stuff worked pretty good for me, good controllability, no extraction problems, etc
I usually practice with lighter stuff at a range, this is really just to be carried in a hiking gun
