Pat,
If you already have a 327 Night Guard, the 327 TRR8 would be a similar revolver? They just came out with the "SUPER GP100" which is a 8 round capacity. From the other forums, it is supposed to be another RedHawk. However, the Super GP100 may not be California compliant since I have checked on the state compliance site and it is not listed. Have you look for the RedHawk at Turner's Outdoor yet?
Liquid Metal, Thank you. It’s funny, I didn’t think the Super GP100 was available in CA either. I went to the Ruger site and found the specs for it and it does say it’s available in California. Thinking it was an older link I went to the CA Handgun Roster page and sure enough it IS on the roster.
Here are those links, just for kicks...not holding my breath that the government’s link will show up right. They never do in this state.

Of course the link doesn’t say “yay or nay”. Jerks.

As to your first question:
Yes, the TRR8 would be similar. That’s what attracts me to it.
A few years ago I sent my 327 in to S&W because I noticed a burr in the rifling near the crown of the barrel. I kept getting “one shot flyers”. With every 8 rounds I fired I would have this nice group at 10 yards except 1 round would be 3 or 4 inches to the right. It happened over and over.
One day while cleaning the gun I noticed a bit of metal sticking up at the crown just a few thousandths of an inch inside the barrel. I hadn’t noticed that before. I talked to a gunsmith about recrowning the barrel. He recommended sending it in to S&W.
I did.
I had read about the TRR8 and asked S&W if they could install a TRR8 barrel on my Night Guard. I was told they couldn’t because the Night Guards have a different barrel attachment configuration.
They also told me “Nothing is wrong with your 327. We are shipping it back.”
When I got the gun back the burr was gone. They had also installed a new Tritium front sight as I had questioned them about it’s longevity (I think they did it to detract from the fact that there was a burr and they did fix it but wouldn’t admit it)
Anyway, my gun was fixed and I was happy.
Since then I have wanted a TRR8 but I just haven’t had the money or another gun I wanted popped up and I bought that one...or two.
My 327 is my favorite revolver.
By the way, the GP100s and the Redhawks have different internal designs from what I have learned here on THR. The Redhawk is more robust and can be very hard to tune. The GP100s have a different configuration and are tuned much easier.
I have been considering buying a Ruger DA though, mostly because I am angry at S&W for a small list of QC things with another two revolvers I have been going back and forth with them over, but I won’t go over them here. This thread isn’t about that.
Here is what I have decided. Since new guns are really hard to get right now I plan to give my favorite LGS a list of guns I want that include the following:
TRR8
M&P R8
Ruger 5059 - 8 shot .357
Ruger Super GP100 (now that I know it’s CA legal - Thank you LM
)
Ruger 5050 - .45 Colt / .45 ACP
S&W 625
(The bottom 2 are other guns I really want)
Whichever one they can get for me first is the gun I intend to buy. How’s that for what I call “CoVid Roulette”?
By the way, Turner’s Outdoorsman has empty shelves, just like everywhere else here.
Ah! I think I know why I “assumed” the Super GP100 was not CA legal. The Super GP100 9mm (Model 5066) is not on the CA roster. I had looked at that one, saw it wasn’t in the list and just assumed the .357 wasn’t. I have no idea why that one isn’t on the list except perhaps Ruger didn’t want the hassle.
