357 sig: who has them and how do you like them? Any brand of gun .

what's recoil like in a sub compact compared to a .40 S&W

For the Glock 27 (subcompact) I found the 357SIG "recoil" more pleasant than the .40. The 357SIG was snappier but the .40 felt less pleasant and actually caused my hand to hurt after several magazines. This may have been mostly due to a difference in average projectile weights.
I have heard this echoed by other shooters, including some far more experienced than I.

I can carry most any decent gun as an off duty gun, I went with the P239 SAS DAK in .40. Small light and simple, and, I can use department ammo for practice. (we issue Glock 35's and 23's).

Bought a .357 SIG barrel and a couple mags to play with. Seems to be an outstanding round, shoots better, for me, than the .40. So, best of both worlds, I practice in .40 and then qualify with my own .357 SIG ammo with just a barrel swap.

I purchased a Glock 32. Took it to the range and was super impressed with it. It's highly accurate. I was breaking clay pigeons at 50 yards in 2 shots repeatedly. I also fired some hornady 147 grain hollow point and it really zinged. Im very impressed with the caliber. Recoil is about the same as the 40 give or take, and the bullets really zing out of the gun and shoot extremely flat.

Thanks for all the great advice!

Deputy25: between us we have the set. I was really impressed with the round. powerful and accurate. Pretty easy to make follow up shots. I can see why you carry this weapon.

What Id like to see is a drop in barrel for the Kahr PM40 series, and some of the other manufacturers that only make a 40.

Ive heard there can be issues with some guns like Kahr due to the higher chamber pressures created by the 357sig.

That said my duty weapon is a Glock 35 w/ a KKM 357sig barrel in it. I havent chrono'd it but at a touch over 5" barrel length Im thinking Im gettin near 1500fps out of the Winchester Ranger ammo our PD issues.

I have since converted several of the 40 guys over to the 357sig side, but I am still amazed at how many of my fellow officers think of it as a wildcat.

Oh well I love the round, but Im looking for an ultra compact version, and cant find one. The baby Glock is too thick and bulky for me

Tom

The baby glock is so block and thick i don't carry it much either. My main carry gun is a Kahr PM9. The Glock 32 is not much larger than the 26/33. It is actually easier to carry as I can get it higher into a slightly softer part of my waist area than the little 26. I have not carried it all day, but the few hours I drove with it, it was pretty comfortable.

The round, to me, shoots so accurately and with so much power that I've decided to reload this particular round so as to keep a good supply on hand. I have equipment for reloading, but had not made up my mind until I shot the 357 sig yesterday. I've never been able to hit clay pigeons at 50-60 yards with 2 shot consistency before, but these rounds really go where you point them. I have a little .17 cal revolver, and it shoots like the 357 except it's obviously not as powerful. I really like these fast, flat shooting rounds. The 147 grain Hornady hollowpoints were really powerful. I had loads of fun with the Glock 32 and think it's a great way to become introduced to this round (of course, replacement barrels are a less expensive option, but I wanted to keep my 40 cal 22C dedicated).

229 sport. I have one just like it.

Surprised the 357 Sig is not more popular than it is. The 357 Sig really struts its stuff compared to some other popular auto cartridges when you start engaging at targets 50 - 75 yards down range.

Its popular with people who shoot it and know what it is.

I think a lot of the problem is, theres a lot of mis/dis-information floating around about the round. To many people who dont even own guns chambered in it, who seem to know everything about it, which is mostly bad, and want to make sure you as little as they do.

I have owned these in 357:
Sig 229
Steyr M-357
Glock 31
Glock 32
Glock 35 w/ KKM barrel
XD-357
H&K USP-compact
M&P-357

I really love the round. My current carry gun is the M&P. Only downside is the cost. So I do most of my practicing with the M&P-9 and pack the 357.

I'm getting into this cartridge, and planning on buying a G32, but I see a lot of compacts in .357SIG. It seems to me like you would lose a lot of the advantage of this caliber with these shorter barreled guns. What the caliber has going for it is velocity.

I have the Glock 31 great gun good multi-caliber platform. very little recoil. the only thing a .357 sig round has in common with the other 9mm rounds is that it is based on the same 9mm (.355") projectile that they use. From their the similaritys end. the .357 sig is faster than a 9mm or 40 and hits harder than some .45acp. Its not just another 9mm round. in fact its put on a 40 S&W casing thats been necked down to fit a 9mm projectile. By far the best round on the market for performance and ease of shooting

I agree. For the slight difference in size between the compacts and full size guns, the full size make more sense.

For those of you who have the Glocks in 357SIG, are you encountering the battering or peening of the underside of the slide from the locking block my 31 is?

It is normal to most Glocks in 357 Sig and 40 S&W. My G31 has the peening marks. I don't worry about it because of previous experience with Glocks in 40 S&W. My Glock 24 has had the peening marks for many years and many thousands of rounds. It seems like it got to a certain point and more or less stopped.

Assuming you are talking about this. http://www.custom-glock.com/peen.html

I am a big fan of the 357 Mag and had to try the 357 Sig; the round may be great but I am having a hard time getting past the Glock 32 platform. The trigger is terrible and mine is inaccurate; I definitely prefer my G22. I am thinking about giving the 357 Sig a try in another platform.

I picked up an HK USP Compact in 357 Sig and love it. I don't find the recoil as bad as some have mentioned. Kind of expensive to shoot if you don't reload but I do so no big deal. It's fun to shoot water filled milk jugs with and accurate enough to vaporize empty shotshells at 20+yds. This pistol is well on it's way to becoming my new CCW sidearm :).

I have both the .40 & 357Sig barrels for my Sig 226 and use the 357Sig barrel for carry. It's accurate and fun to shoot and so far not a hiccup.

SIG P239. Love it.

The only problem I have is with bullet setback. It's actually quite dramatic, to be honest with you. I suspect it's less a function of the gun than with the ammunition (Remington 125-grain JHP, for the record).

Thanks Morgo and Peter M. Eick for the point-out on the P229 Sport. Very elegant-looking gun.

I wish HK would make the P30 in .357 Sig.

Oh yes yes yes. Me, too. :D
Still kicking myself for not buying a USPc in 357SIG when CDNN was selling them for the mid-$500.

Several years ago I found a good price on 357SIG ammo from Georgia Arms. At least close to 9mm. Hard to get a good price on 357SIG locally. Buying in bulk mail-order seems to make more sense. I have a set of 357SIG dies and so I'd probably reload for practice and save my money for factory carry ammo.

I really like the HK P7 manual of arms, so right now I'm settling for carrying hot 9mm rounds. If the "perfect" 357SIG platform came along I'd probably carry that instead.
