.375 winchester loads

Several years ago a friend bought a Marlin 375 in 375 Winchester and when I saw it I kind of turned up my nose because I was used to bolt action high velocity rifles. It was a half magazine straight stocked rifle with a recoil pad. I went with him to shoot the rifle the first time and I really got a surprise. It was really fun to shoot, super accurate and it had a good trigger. It completely changed my view of large caliber rifles.

Hodgdon lists loads here.

The 375 never caught on because in the real world it doesn't do anything a 30-30 or 35 Rem won't do at least as well, except kick harder. 200-220 gr bullets are as heavy as Hodgdon shows. IIRC they did offer a 250 gr load at one time.

Interesting. Have you used the .375 on anything?

Shortly after the cartridge was introduced (1978) my father bought a Marlin Model 375, then shortly after a Ruger #3 in the same caliber. I still have the Marlin and he still has the Ruger.

I've used both rifles on deer and hogs shooting 220 gr. Hornady's loaded to about 2200 fps. It's an absolute hammer. Either Re-7 or AA1680 will get you 2200 fps with a 220 gr. bullet, I use Re-7. I'd love to take one of these rifles on an elk hunt.

I guess the Hornady bullet is long gone, but Sierra offers a 200 gr. FP and Barnes a 255 gr. FP.

The year that I first fired the Marlin in 375 Winchester was about 1979. I had previously owned a 30-30 and my impression of the 375 was that it was a really powerful short range cartridge, much more authority than a 30-30. I think it would be perfect in a Ruger No.3.

I really like the looks of that Sierra flat point 200 grain. We were using Winchester 200 grain loads and that weight seems to be good for the 375.

I’ve owned a Ruger #3 in .375 Win for many years, but couldn’t get decent groups with it. I always used IMR 4198 because I got great results with it in my 444. This was with Speer,Sierra and Hornady, plus a couple different cast bullets.Recently I tried RL-7 with no real improvement, but I found some H-335 loads for it in an old Hodgdon manual. The 335 is giving me MOA groups for the first three rounds, then it opens up as the barrel heats. This is common with a barrel band. This is with Sierra 200s,but my old stash of Hornady 220s will be tested soon. I’ll be taking the old girl to the woods this season.
