38 Special wadcutters?

I've been loading and shooting 38 wadcutters since the late 70's or so. They were cheap to shoot back then, when ammo cost me more relative to what I made than it does now. I still like shooting them. Virtually no recoil and nice clean holes in the target. Brass lasts a long time.

I tried that reverse the HBWC bullet back then. I don't know what they'd do against flesh and blood, but let me tell you boys and girls, they made a hole in a bank of Virginia red clay (redneck ballistic gel) that you could shove your fist into from 5-7 yards or so. I wouldn't have carried them, but just wanted to try a few for grins and giggles.
I had to chuckle when I read your post ~ because I can relate. Back in the early 80s we shot tons of WCs into North Alabama redneck ballistic gel, and our results were right in line with yours.

I will sometimes run WCs for SD in the hot months on the gulf coast, and then transition when the time changes to my 158SWCs for SD in the Colt Agent.
I can also attest to what a 148HBWC will do to an armadillo. I’m certain it would dissuade any attacker.

Hollow base wadcutters give the best grouping but due to the hollow base they cannot be driven very fast. If you drive them too fast, you risk blowing the skirt off the bullet which may become lodged in the barrel.

Solid base wadcutters can be driven harder than hollow base wadcutters. But their accuracy is not as hollow base wadcutters. But, we are talking millimeters in difference in accuracy. Solid base wadcutters are more than adequate for purposes other than bullseye competition.

All my moulds for cast bullet wadcutters make solid base wadcutters. Good for plinking ammunition.
