I am new to reloading. Gun shop sold me Red Dot Alliant powder. I can find no data in relation to my 100gr bullets. Info I found says Red Dot for heavier bullet. Can I use Red Dot for my application or should I change Powder. One thread suggested that Red Dot does not meter well on light loads. Any advise is appreciated Thanks -Newbie - anxious to learn

Have you tried Alliant's website? I don't find a lot of data for Alliant powders except on their site. I just looked in a manual and Red Dot was listed for a .380 100gr jacketed bullet. Check with them.

Clark,

My friends and I have been using Promo/Red Dot for the 380 for a while. I'll look at my data and let you know what we have been running. At the small value 2.8gr, it may be hard to dispense in some measures with consistency, but the LNL PM handles it fine.

Adding info now...
Alliant had Red Dot data for 380 ACP in their older manuals. BDS had posted a scan of the relevant sections here some time ago.
I've been using Promo, which uses Red Dot data per Alliant's info. And my buddies have used Promo and Red Dot.

RC nailed it - 2004 data has 2.8 gr as max for a 100gr FMJ. We've been loading 2.6-2.9 with Berry's and Xtreme 100gr Plated seated at .955". We did work up to this. And it works very well in a variety of 380 pistols.

You are right, on the issues of inconsistencies at lower charge weights. One buddy had a lot of problems on the Lee Auto Disk. As I mentioned no issues on the LNL.

Alliant used to list 2.8 grains (MAX) Red-Dot with a 100 grain jacketed bullet.

Start at 2.5 and work up.

I shoot 3.3 with a 90 XTP in a Kel-Tec P3AT and SIG P-232.

Good load!!

IIRC, Red Dot is obsessively a shotgun powder. An acquaintance of mine ended up with a huge quantity of it from a government contractor when some entity changed their mind. It meters pretty well out of a Hornady Deluxe powder measure (the long skinny one) with the pistol insert. No so much out of a Dillon. I've had pretty good luck with it for light loads with cast bullets in .38, .44 and .45.

MAKE damn sure your powder measure throws consistent charges that small.

Mine won't. I scoop red dot for charges below about 3.8 grains.
