RustyShackleford,
(oh know, don't tell me you are a Werewolf too! Correia's book's main supporting characters have the last name of Shackleford)
I think your advice above is alright, but not for everyone. Pistol selection is so subjective, that IMHO there is not one "magical choice" for everyone. Some love Glocks, some hate Glocks, (swap "Glocks" for any brand name and it applies across the board). Some like Rubber, plastic, wood, Bakelite (for those milsurp carriers) and some want a revolver. I am generally of the mindset that as long as the gun is reliable, and you like it, carry it (some milsurps I immediately discard like the CZ-52 and the Nagant Revolver). I also tend to not recommend Taurus products as my experiences with them have been well, crappy.
I bought my 3913 used. It seems to fit in my hands magically. It's a great gun that's accurate, has a super nice and smooth DA trigger pull and a crisp short SA trigger pull. It conceals nicely and it carrys 8+1 rounds of 124 Grain JHP 9MM rounds.
Was 9 rounds enough firepower? So, I traded a 1911 for a Glock 19, which has similar dimensions to the 3913. I figured "ok, I have 15+1 rounds of 9MM, and a one step operation, no safeties other than the passive ones. I shoot it just fine and it's been reliable enough. However, I just don't like shooting it / carrying it. It's now back in its case in the gunsafe and I am back to the 3913.
I think this is one of S&W's best products that they have ever made. It's compact, nice to fire, easy to conceal, and for those that want to use them, it has manual safeties.

I'd look into a Ruger, HK, Glock or SIG-Sauer 9mmNATO.
