.40 guys: Sell me on .40 S&W...

10mm is better and more versatile. Same bullet, more of a power range, stronger more robust firearm. The .40 short and weak was just a marketing ploy to allow companies to use existing cheap 9mm frames instead of developing new ones for the 10mm.

G'day Hartzpad, and et al.,

Just a quick thought to run by you since you stated that you already had three 10mm platforms. Have you considered just procuring conversion barrels for those to allow you to safely shoot 40 SW?

I have a Glock 20 in 10mm and I purchased a conversion barrel for 40 SW. So when I want to run 40 SW, just a quick barrel swap and we are good to go. Yes, just change the barrel everything else does not change. In my case same sight hold for targets 0 – 25 Metres.

Something to think about. Such a shame that Wally World doesn't have Winchester White box in 10mm but they sure do in 40 SW! Good luck to ya and Merry New Year!

When I shoot my USP .40f to the ability of the gun I can get 1 1/2" groups at 50ft.

That's WHEN I can :D

I took my M&P .40 to a steel plate shoot in Ohio and it had no problems taking down the plates except for the big one from a D9 Cat that took 2 :)

The 40 S&W is a great round and here to stay. Capacity nearly that of 9mm, and a bullet nearly that of a 45. Tough to go wrong! The 40 can do 90% of what a 10mm can do and it can do and since a 357 Sig has the exact same capacity, I'll take a 40 every time. I don't shoot steel but for self defense you really can't go "wrong" with a 40 S&W.

I've owned several .40's and if I didn't reload I might well be "a .40 guy" In a medium to large size pistol it feels very good...not too punchy and not to whimpy...a lot like my target loads in .45acp (6gr. unique with a 200gr oregon trail semi-waddcutter...very clean and knocks plates down with "lighter than usual" .45 recoil In fact I load the same 6gr w/ 230gr XTP HP for a lighter recoiling fast deffensive load. Then there are the hot 7gr/200gr XTP loads those are NOT enjoyable to the average shooter...I carry them only during hunting trips as a backup or up close option.

With my lighter loads and most ball ammo in my 5" 1911 a Glock22 feels almost identicle...maybe a tad lighter with some loads of ball. "Ballsy but still easily controllable" My favorite deffesive loads in .40 are the corbon 135gr load (shoots great in GLOCKs) I feel no sunstantial difference between it and the 165 or even 180gr ball loads. Where as in 9mm you can clearly feel the difference between the Gold Dot 124gr+P (my preffered carry round in 9mm) and regular ball 9mm..."halfway to .40 recoil best describes it"

I've often said the G19/23 are some of the best carry options going. But I really prefer the 17/22 as I have big hands and the G23 with the finger grooves actually "hurts" my hands with a lot of shooting...maybe fatigue is a better word. The G22 with gen 2 or 3 grips does not. So shooting comnfort-wise I'd say it's better to go 9mm in a smaller gun...which for most people would mean a sub-compact...for me even the current mid-sized guns would be in that category. The G19 has never bothered me in any version. So maybe fit is slightly more important when you move to .40 or larger.

What does the .40 do that a 9mm or .45 doesn't? I haven't found anything myself...though it's certainly a decent chambering that I've enjoyed and more enjoyable than a 10mm or hotter .45acp loads. Performance wise either of those has it beat to me...especially if you reload for your handguns. If I anticipated a higher capacity HG being a serious "need" for a cary situation I'd rather have the 9mm...not for the few extra rounds but I can shoot and move and transition between targets slightly faster with a 9mm. With good carry ammo there really aint a nickels worth of difference between 9 and .40 and maybe 10 cents worth between 10mm and .45 If I was you I'd just download for my 10mm's since you are already running that platform. But far be it from me to talk anyone out of buying more guns "just because" if you want a CZ in .40 heck buy one...I don't know if it's justified given what you have or not but when has that ever stopped any of us gun addicts? -LOL

To me 10mm and .45 are worth reloading for where as I'd probably just buy bulk ball for 9mm and .40 You aren't going to ring much extra out of .40 handloading anyway...it's already basically a "10mm special" and running at redline just to do what it does. I think it is a marginally beter choice than 9mm for law enforcment. And it certainly is more fun to shoot 500 rounds in a day in a G22 than a G21 (which I still like but it takes a toll on a high-volume range day) It probably rides the top of the "comfort zone" for recoil and performance that a more or less "non-gun guy" shooter will become quickly comfortable with. Most cops are not "gun guys" so I see why it's so popular for them. To the civilian shooter sportsman and reloader...ehhh I'd rather have a 10mm or another 9mm or .45 I don't currently own a 10mm so that would actually be my choice probably. I think your thread has actual made me solidify my resolve to take the next used G20 that comes through the shop home.

So there...I don't know if either of us "needs" the extra caliber but maybe we are both talked into one anyway-LOL Probably way cheaper to buy factory ball for plate matches than the 10mm come to think of it...so the work vs fun ratio with all the reloading might actually just justify it anyway unless you have a sweet progressive setup for your 10mm's Dang...I guess you DO need to go buy one. :D
