40 S&W pistol recommendation

for carry

if you don't mind the lower capacity 7+1, the Walther PPS is excellent to me.. it's my EDC.. shoots amazingly accurate for such a small gun. i shoot it nearly as well as my P226 sig.

can't imagine a better double action trigger.. but that's just me.. :D

I had a Glock 22 for a while. Sold it, got a P226 SIG in 40, very glad I did. More ergonomic and I shoot it better. Don't get me wrong, the Glock is a fine gun, I just can't shoot striker fired pistols well. Not sure why.

I've always been a fan of 10mm and I found a slightly used S&W model 1076 that I just love. However the price of 10mm brass has skyrocketed, just like most everything ammo related has.

So I'd like to find a comparable pistol in 40 S&W, which I can get lots of free brass for.
How about a 4006? It will be on a smaller frame size and will not have the frame-mounted decocker (these models, whose third model number digit is 2, were only produced briefly), but will share the all stainless steel construction and DA/SA trigger. These are only currently produced - the last time I looked - in a "TSW" configuration and will be expensive, but any number of used ones are still around.

How about the Glock 23? A nice gun for open or concealed carry, and for at-home SD, too. I have two of them and they have been 100% flawless.

$100-300 - sigma

$300-450 - 24/7 pro

$450 - 600- Springfield XD, Barretta Px4 Storm, CZ75, FNP-40, Glock 22 or 27, S/W MP40, Taurus PT94,

$600-750 - Barretta 90-two, P40, PM40, p99

750 up - cz dw, H&K USP, PARA 1911,

I would vote for the S&W 4006. I found one a year or so ago. It had 3 magazines and was $300.00. It is all stainless steel and slightly heavy. The DA/SA trigger is very smooth and easy. Almost like shooting a high dollar 1911.

I love my USP.40 Compact. Anything H&K will be built properly for the caliber and will last you a lifetime with minimal maintenance. The P2000 is slightly better than the USP series of pistols IMHO. I have a P2000sk as well (in 9mm) and I really do think the P2000 is a more refined version of the USP. In the end, both will be great shooters and I can fully recommed either one.

I own, shoot and carry an M&P .40 and love it however you mentioned that you wanted DA/SA if you need that then look at the PX4 Storm. I really want to as well not a replacement for the M&P but in addition to.

I really like my Ruger p91... it does have a long trigger pull and it is not the smoothest trigger.... but there is something about how it fits my hand and points.... I tend to be more accurate with it than my Sig, Glock, or HK pistols....

These (with no budgetary limitations I assume $300-$800) are all good ideas:

1.) Glock 22: Simple. Effective. Like all other Glocks, but in .40 S&W. You get a 15 rd. mag and Glock efficiency and reliability.

2.) Smith & Wesson M&P: Like above. It's Smith & Wesson's take on a polymer striker fired pistol. They work well and shoot well.

3.) Stoeger Arms Cougar: Probably the least expensive. Reliable. Basically a steel framed Beretta Storm. Solid, good gun. Easy takedown. Not too expensive.

4.) Beretta 96: Like the 92FS series used by our military, but in .40 S&W.

5.) SigPro: I love 'em. Sig Pro pistols are awesome guns, and work very well over a lot of use. And while they are pricier (some are a bit over $800), they are worth every penny, and you'll feel it when you shoot it.

There you have it. There are many others. These are all good ones.

If you like S/A, then you want to consider a BHP; I'm not a big fan of most .40S&W guns when there is a 9 mm variant available, which I am a big fan of, but I like the BHP in .40

If I had to choose and use a .40 S&W caliber pistol, which thankfully I don't, I would choose the H&K USP

For those not familar with a 1076, it's DA/SA with a decocker. Uses single stack magazines.

I've found some older S&W models that are DAO, and they are just not the same. The SA trigger is pretty sweet.

And before anyone suggests a 1911, I have a couple and they are okay, but I've mispent my middle age playing with revolvers, and I',m just not comfortable enough with them.

And before anyone suggests 9mm or 45ACP or any other caliber, unless they can find me a free source of brass for those calibers, let's stay with 40 s&W
I haven't got mine yet but I will soon. S&W M&P .40. I have looked at hundreds of reviews and everyone is thrilled!

I'm with walkalong on the XD, for the reason's he mentioned.:) I'd consider the XD in the top three as far as 40 S&W pistols go.

EAA EZ 40, I got one after owning an Zastava 9mm, they both are flawless and spot on accurate!! It is a large pistol, but because it is, it really handles the snap of the 40 cal round nicely. It is also not too heavy as the use of an aluninum frame makes it much lighter than steel pistols the same size. One of the nicest shooting 40 S&W pistols I have come across!!

XD(M)-40, PX4, FNP-40 & the MP-40 would be my choice for a mid-priced .40 S&W.

BHP would be my higher end choice.

CZ-75 variant on the lower price scale.

Out of these in .40 S&W I have the XD and BHP in .40 S&W.

My next purchase would be either the PX4 or the FNP-40.

But no matter what our preference are, the gun that feels best to you is the one you need to look long and hard at. ;)

Good luck in your comparison and may you enjoy whatever you purchase. It's tough to go wrong with any of the above unless one just feels terrible to you.
