I've always been a fan of 10mm and I found a slightly used S&W model 1076 that I just love. However the price of 10mm brass has skyrocketed, just like most everything ammo related has.

So I'd like to find a comparable pistol in 40 S&W, which I can get lots of free brass for.

For those not familar with a 1076, it's DA/SA with a decocker. Uses single stack magazines.

I've found some older S&W models that are DAO, and they are just not the same. The SA trigger is pretty sweet.

And before anyone suggests a 1911, I have a couple and they are okay, but I've mispent my middle age playing with revolvers, and I',m just not comfortable enough with them.

And before anyone suggests 9mm or 45ACP or any other caliber, unless they can find me a free source of brass for those calibers, let's stay with 40 s&W

I think there is a guy selling a S&W 411 on the handguns for sale forum. I'd think something like that would be just right.

Another option would be a FN pistol. Reasonably priced, and they come with 3 mags, too!

Check out the Beretta PX4 Storm. It's not a single stack, but everything else would fit your criteria. It comes with three mags and you can find them for around $500 new.

I have a Sig 239 and an XD 40SC. Both are well made, accurate, and easy to shoot. The Sig MIGHT be better made but not by much. The XD fits my hand better and is my carry firearm.. Handle and if possible shoot a variety of models. Pick the one that feel the best. If you choose a Sig or XD you won't be disappointed.

Ruger P-944 is DA/SA with a decocker safety but it has a double stack magazine. You might look around for a law enforcement trade in Smith & Wesson DA/SA in .40. The Army Navy store here had some back in August. That would actually be the closest to what you are looking for. I think they were asking around 359.00 for the ones they had.

I would suggest the XD. Easy to shoot well, super dependable, accurate. Simple well thought out design. Great triggers.

My vote goes to the Sig 226/229 with SRT. That being said my only 40 is an HK P2000 and while its great, it is plastic and not similar to your S&W so I didnt list it first. I dont think you can beat either of those 2 guns in my opinion. At least until HK comes out with their P30 in 40 cal.

BTW I am a 1911 guy but I don't want one in 40 however 10mm is a different story....

I would second the Sig P226 or P229 both are fantasitc firearms, extremely reliable, and very accurate. Although not single stacks they are still sthin enough to handle well. The main diffrence between these two is the barrel length, with the 226 having the longer barrel.

If you like that S&W in 10 MM there should be thousands of .40 S&W versions (4006 etc) on the used market. They were very popular with the police, but S&W no longer makes them and the police have moved to polymer pistols. They are now showing up on the used market with little wear and for pretty good prices.

Once you hold a M&P, nothing else quite feels right.

I have a Glock 22C and it's a wonderful shooting, accurate, reasonably priced pistol.

+1 on the M&P .40...simply the best feeling poly gun on the market and designed around the .40 caliber from its very inception.

2 outstanding choices IMO

...

Depending on certain criteria, you may have. It could be one of the striker-only type 40's mentioned above or if you have no problems with polymer framed, lighter guns or you want an all metal, yet light gun, aluminum framed guns.

I can speak highly of 2 DA/SA "soft, balanced" hammered 40cals.

1. Beretta's polymer framed lightweight, yet balanced, soft recoil, Px4 40.

Mine has over 9000 flawless rounds, accurate, with great, fast follow-up accuracy due the the rotating barrel design. Added to that, "the ease" of disassembly, inspections, cleanings/lubrication, and reassembly. It just can't get any easier or faster.

2. All metal, *Sig P229/40 which was built around, and for, the 40cal. Again, lighter, with an aluminum frame, yet the "balance" and slightly more weight vs plastic framed guns, absorbs the recoil and falls back on-target "naturally" and offers soft-felt recoil and quick back on-target accuracy.

*Both mine have aprox 4000 flawless rounds, each, on them and they too, are one of, IF not, the easiest to disassemble, inspect, clean/lubricate and reassemble out there, bar none.

Either gun is very accurate out of the box, along with, very decent DA actions, that with each 300 rounds, get smoother, lighter, and just more fun to shoot with complete confidence and owner delight.. :)

Beretta's are aprox 400-550 NIB and Sigs are aprox 850- 950 NIB

Both are aprox the same size with the edge going to the Sig P229 which is slightly less in both, height and length.. ccw wise or not.

Sigs come in decocker-only, no safety and Beretta's come in F models decocker-safety in-one or G-models, decocker-only. And one can, easily, convert an F-model to a G-model without cost or extra parts, simply removing one spring and ball bearing if the desire.

Luck,

Ls

I love both of my Smith & Wesson M&P40s, and highly recommend them. However, if you like the 10MM, you might consider a Glock 20 or 29. You can buy an aftermarket .40 S&W conversion barrel for them for about $125, and have the power of a 10MM when you need it, and the affordability of the .40 when you don't. Although the M&P40 is my favorite defensive handgun, I bought a G29 for exactly that reason.
