40 or 45

TAP is meant for shooting through barriers (car doors, glass) Critical Defense for shooting through people (HP with special non-clogging tip).

CD sounds like that Magsafe round they had years ago that was suppose to produce devistating wounds on tissue.
Which one of all brands would be good for both?
Federal HST? Winchester Talons/Ranger?

Wow, after reading all that I hope the BG has a calculator with him to figure out what he's supposed to do after being shot... "Ah, I see you've opted for a .40 S&W, excellent choice sir. Now if you'll just give me a moment to figure out the energy and momentum of your round of choice, I'll decide whether or not to stop". Sheesh, just pick one and practice.

I've owned a couple 1911s and enjoyed shooting them but wouldn't want to use either one for a carry gun. Recently I got a Taurus PT740 Slim .40S&W. This is an interesting pistol, compact, light, thin and very concealable. Adjustable three dot sights, accurate with a very good trigger. The recoil is manageable, a bit snappy but that's to be expected with such a light weight pistol. I don't mind shooting 50-100 rounds at the range in one session but wouldn't want to do much more in a day. I didn't get this gun for a range gun but for a self defense piece. If I want to burn a lot of gunpowder in a day the SR9 serves that purpose well.

That's just the nature of the beast. I felt the same way about my Glock 21, at first. The recoil didn't hurt, or anything. It didn't feel much different from a 9. The only way to explain it is I got tired faster. After maybe 100+ rounds, I'd notice my hands weren't as steady.

Then I got the G27, and it was the same story.

I must have deadened some nerves. I could shoot either one until I went broke, now. I rarely head to the range with less than 400 rounds, not including .22.

Burn gun powder the less costly way with a .22 LR.

Even though I stubbornly carry my G 23 .40 most of the time, I do prefer shooting my old .45acp Kimber. There's a slight weight difference and the butt of the 23 is much smaller and easier to conceal. I really enjoy firing lots of rounds through my .45's. I don't particularly enjoy the .40......but I know I can get the .40 on target and fire in less time. And I'm one of THOSE crazy people that prefer a DA for carrying. I still can't bring myself to reccomend a .40 over a .45 though.

Do you find that the .45 ACP does more damage than the .40 S & W cal?

No, I don't. But I really didn't pay enough attention. The .40 Win. Ranger HP did seem to a little more damage than the .45 Hornady round. Now you have my curiousity up and I'll have to do sme testing. Darn I hate that! lol. As for Win. .45acp range rounds, well, I guess there's a reason they call it a range round.

If I remember right at one time it wasn't the caliber but the design of the bullet or type of bullet as to say the 9mm HP expanded to a larger hole if it didn't fail or that MagSafe was one of those rounds that really beefed up a little mouse gun like .25 ACP or .32 Auto.
