40 caliber choices
I have used 4 different guns in .40 S&W.
I would normally use only full size guns with metal frames because of the recoil. The H&K pistols are the exception.
I am wearing my issue H&K P2000 right now. It is an excellent weapon and I have complete confidence in it. Recoil is mild compared to other plastic .40 caliber pistols.
The problem is cost. It will run about$750.00 or more.
My agency used to issue BERETTA 96D Brigadier models. Again, an excellent pistol, but hard to find. You can get a regular 96 model from some of the dicounters for @ $400.00 brand new and they are a good buy. All of mine have been above average for accuracy and smoothness of trigger.
Problems, are durability. The 155 grain .40 caliber rounds can be hard on the gun. I know of one that wore out after 2,400 rounds.
GLOCK. I love GLOCK 9m.m. pistols and carried both the 17 and 19 on duty. I used to own a GLOCK 22 and found the recoil to be excessive. I cannot recommend it for this reason. Others love it, so rent one if you can and decide for yourself.
SIG 229. Nice gun. Accurate, reliable and compact, but may be above your price range when new. You can find factory refurbished models in your range. Although this is a compact gun, the metal frame and heavier slide, keep recoil under control.
Problems, trigger not as smooth as the BERETTA, at least on mine. This is another rent it and decide for yourself gun.
STOEGER-BERETTA 8040. With the very low price of this gun, which is now being made in TURKEY, you may want to consider it.
I have only shot the 9m.m., but have found it very reliable. Weight and grip size will keep recoil to manageable levels.
Again, try it before you buy if possible.
Good luck.
