Don't forget BE-86.

I load plated 165gr bullets and mostly use BE-86, CFE Pistol and Power Pistol. When I load jacketed bullets, then Longshot is normally what I like to use.

40S&W is very easy to load and there are plenty of powders that will work. I have even found some good accuracy using 700-X. When you look at the Hodgdon load data you will see they have powders listed from fast to on the slower side like Longshot.

What does your reloading manual suggest? That's what I would go with.

What a useless comment. Do you handload?
Reloading manuals do not list a caliber and say, "This is the powder we suggest."
It lists about a dozen and gives safe data for each. The OP is looking for real world suggestions from people with experience with the round.

OP, the good news is that there are many powders suitable for the .40 S&W. I have used Unique, Bullseye, W231/HP38 and others all with good results. If you have any of these on hand, try them.
My favorite is W231/HP38. It is efficient, meters well and shoots great.

Hope this helps.
