What is the most versatile or "old reliable" powder for the 45-70.

I have mostly marlin lever action rifles, shoot the 1895 the most.

What would give the widest range of bullet weights and load choices?

I know this is a broad question, but if you were going to buy a large lot of powder what would it be?

Unique is a fast pistol powder that works great.
4895 is a rifle powder that works great.
Re7 works best for me.

What does it all mean?
For heavy bullets, you can use almost ANY powder in a 45/70.

you picked a sweetheart cartridge to reload, Brandon.

I have 18 diffrent powders to choose from...I am sure that if I looked HARD enough, I could find reliable reloading data for ALL of them. :)

First choice is, as others have said, RL7. IMR4198 is very close to the same burn rate as RL-7 and works as well...both give a good, full case and doesn't generate too much pressure.

I am, however, waiting on data from the guys with the pressure barrels and propeller hats to try out Trail Boss in a 45-70.

I want some Cheerio's for my 45-70!

thanks

I have been using 4198 in 1lb cans and was thinking about 5lbs.

I have often thought about black powder, but I didn't want to fool with the corrosion or mess.

thanks for the comments

Brandon

Like the case filling ability of FFG but don't like the clean up??
Try SR4756 smokeless.
Fills the case, pressures and velocities are kept to the original specification and no messy clean-up.

Powder preferred

As a California Saeco bullet designer and Company Distributor i sold hundreds of custom precision 45/70 4 cavity molds with handles from 300 grains to 405 grains and the most accurate loads that won matches for those bullets was 48 grains of 3031.

I advised my customers of that load and they were uniformly pleased.
