.45 acp for coyotes?

What would be the best bullet to use without tearing up the hide:(
any info is appreciated
 
Any full metal jacket...it will make two 45 caliber holes.

Hollowpoints....will make one 45 caliber hole, and one 60 caliber hole (varies with the type of bullet...some expand more than others)
 
More importantly then the hole size.
Are you gonna be able to find them for the hide after you shoot them with a FMJ and they run half a mile before dying??

Cause that's what they will do if you don't break the spine or make a head shot.

yes ill keep my shots to 25 yards or less.

Shot placement is paramount im just wondering what bullet will be the most effective without tearing up the hide
 
I doubt if you could hit a coyote with a 45. They are very cagey and usually run before you can get off a shot. It would be very hard to get within range of a 45.
 
You must not have any experiance with a 1911 .45 National Match pistol then.
Or calling coyotes.

I won a lot of beer money in the Army hitting a 2" pipe range marker post at 100 yards with one.

And I have shot coyotes with them, as I said in post #5.

The last Coyote I shot was shot with a .308 at 35 yards, not called in, just showed up like that :).

Doable shot with a .45. For pelt preservation, a 185 JHP at +P velocities IMO should make one hole and stay in, only one hole to sew up.

I bet the coyote will fall over and die just seeing the empty box on the ground.
Better yet all the coyotes with in the mile of you shooting the 45 acp will fall over and die just from hearing the sound of the 45 acp.:what:

If you are talking about a coyote that is attacking you for some odd reason, then yes, a .45 ACP will do. If the coyote acts like 99.9999999 percent of coyotes around here, you will need at least a .223 rifle to have a chance of hitting it from where you are standing.
 
Go for it Poser! I've called a lot of coyotes in less than 10 yds away and always wondered why I didn't try my pistol once. Greg
 
I'm with Gordy. Just call them in close enough to yell John M. Browning and they should fall dead right where they stand, no pelt damage at all.

They can also be very brazen, depending on what they've been conditioned to. I had one within 10 yds of me the other day, right off my back porch. And I wasn't calling them. I stepped outside, and he just looked at me, turned tail, and trotted off with no sense of urgency. If I'd have had my pistol, he'd have easily been dead.

Every so often, I've had a coyote walk right up onto my front porch... now if I wasn't in town and had the .22 in hand...pop! I actually watched one from my kitchen window, it was not even 5 feet away, trying to pop open the lid on our garbage can, window was wide open, I said boo and it scooted.

Anyway, I wouldn't want to hunt Coyotes with .45, but if you can get them in range for a spine or head shot, then that'd probably be the best way to go.
 
Shot a coyote with a 1911 at 8 yards away. Dropped it right there. It was running toward me and i shot it in the chest. It would be good at close range. The coyotes around here are not scared at all. They dont run away or sneak off. Trying to take them all out but its hard to find them some days as they dont stay in one spot for long
 
I've found that my 2007 Ford Econoline work van is awesome for fox hunting. I think it would work pretty well for deer also. Haven't seen many coyotes though. I was behind a Peterbuilt that got an aligator one day. That caliber is too large though and pretty much ruined the meat. :evil:
 
All 'yotes fall to hard ball, didn't ya know? :scrutiny:

I read that right here on THR (or something similar, ... posted by some old .45-lovin' geezer :rolleyes: ).

Plus, ball ammo best preserves their hides and the hides of most anything else that has a hide worth preserving.
