It's late, mind is rambling... after reading Aug/Sep 2006 Handguns, pg. 48 re: the XD-45:

".45 ACP means something. It is the American way to do things, like throwing a Chevy 350 into your boat, truck, snowmobile and that old Nova you use on the dirt track. A real American would use a .45 ACP as his carry piece, bedside grabber, BBQ gun and IPSC competitor." (This after whining about 9mm "Eurotrash" in the previous paragraph...)

What else could we come up with for the letters ACP besides "Automatic Colt Pistol?"

American Caliber Pistol?

Already Combat Proven?

ACP

AUTOMATIC COLT PISTOL I.E. .25 acp,.32 acp,.380 acp,.38acp(forerunner to the .38 Super),.45acp. - mac

Archaic Combat Pistol,,,,,
Almost Combat Powerful,,,,

Artistically Condoned Popgun,,,,,,

All joking aside, JMACDONALD is right.

ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol.
Most of the older automatic pistol cartridges were invented by John Browning for use in his pistol designs, and sold to Colt Firearms.

Among these were:
.25 ACP.
.32 ACP.
.380 ACP
.38 ACP.
.45 ACP.

In Europe, Browning sold many of the same pistols and cartridges to FN, where they were made as metric cartridges:
6.35 mm
7.65 mm
9 mm Short, Kurz, Corto, etc.

Not to mention the fact that this year marks the centennial of the thutty-ought-saix, the best dang service rifle cartidge ever invented.

Oh, and the .32ACP was JMB's favorite cartridge.

ROFLMFAO! Threads like this do bring out the clowns. :D

Actually, I like the ol' round, but not for its "ability to knock 'em off their feet". But, big bullets tend to be more accurate, especially cast bullets. Why, you ask? Well, a blemish on a .45 caliber round, say an air pocket in the lead that you can't see, is less a percentage of the bullet as is such a blemish in a smaller bullet. I've also found that mold blocks don't overheat so bad with big bullets. You can run 'em hotter, actually have to in the case of a certain 360 grain minie ball mold I have, or you get layering and have to toss the bullet.

Anyway, it's easier to work with large bullets when casting and you get less culls in my experience.

Wait a minute. An article praising the XD-45 was bashing "eurotrash" pistols?

The author does know that the XD-45 is made in, and was originally designed in, Croatia, correct?

And Springfield's patriotic, all-American M1911-A1 line has frames made by Imbel of Brazil...

Amazing Concussive Power

I mean after all, just hitting somebody in the arm with one will kill them. Even near misses will knock them off their feet, right?:D

Love my .45s. Cherish those old stories.

Automatic Centerfire Pistol

The above was actually used for a time by gun mags routinely enough that I believed it until relatively recently.

I couldn't guess if it was because he/they/it were PO'd with Colt at the time or if it was deemed "PC".

And, not at all farfetched, enh?

Anti Communist Pistol - You know the type of communist I mean. The type who wants to redistribute the wealth of the capitalists (you, because you have a job) to the proletariat (himself).
