I have an RIA and love it. I also just got done recently installing a beavertail and hammer on it. Some things to consider:
- Armscor makes RIA
- STI's new budget 1911 ($600~) is based on Armscor slides/frames.
- 6 months ago, RIA started being imported with forged slides (Ivan, RIA rep).

They're great budget guns and run right out of the box. Just ask the opinions of some RIA owners on the 1911 forums. I can also provide a couple pictures of mine if you want them.

Bender, I wouldn't be too worried about the editor's note at the end. As he said, even far more expensive guns have reliability issues at times. Further, over at the 1911 forums the Armscor/RIA rep, Ivan Walcott, posts under user name ArmscorBA. He even has his e-mail adress listed at the top of the forum. I've exchanged e-mails with him when I was inquiring about the RIA pistols and the upcoming Armscor/STI Spartan collaboration. He was prompt, curteous, and very helpful. If I buy another GI style 1911 I'll be looking very strongly toward Armscor/RIA; the great reviews and very positive experence of communicating with Ivan via e-mail has made me quite confident in them. If you want more info, look here http://forum.m1911.org/.

Plus, 1911s can be finicky and requiring a little extra attention.
This is just how it goes.

I think a person would be hard pressed to get a better deal for the money than either an SA GI or RIA.

I've seen used Sig P220s for under $500 at the local gun shows, and while some of them looked a bit worse for wear, I've found used Sigs to be sweet shooters.

I own an XD .45 (great piece) but if the price is too steep then may I suggest a Ruger P345? Its in the $350-400 range, is 8+1, and is a VERY nice .45 in every aspect.

If you find a good price online on the XD45 I'd go that way. Even with shipping and transfer fees shouldn't add much more to the price than what it will end up being when you pay Texas's ungodly 8.25% sales tax.:( If anything the XD 45 should start to come DOWN in price. They are marked way over what the 9mms, and 40's go for, figured after the initial scramble for them they would come down to reasonable levels. I'd like to have one myself.
BTW if you want a 1911, there's not a better 'bang for your buck" value than the Taurus PT1911. Fully loaded features with forged frame and slide for right around $500. The Armscor's are good guns for the money too. They are cast though instead of forged, which is really irrelevant unless your shooting thousands of rounds a year. :)

Well dang, just read Rook's post. Nevermind about the RIA cast slides they are now forged. That makes a good deal even better. I noticed they'd popped up about $30 in price or so, that's well worth having a forged slide for the extra money.

Springfield '06 Package

Probably, $519 is a good price for the 4" service model Springer XD .45ACP~!
The 5" tactical model would run approximately $529 (black), with $539 the
going rate on a stainless slide 4" service model, and $549 on the 5" model
with stainless slide.

FWIW, right now for some unknown reason all sub-compacts in 9m/m and
.40 S&W are very hard to come by. I have back orders, awaiting both of
these calibers; in both black, and stainless slide guns.

Less than $600 for a new pistol in 45 acp sounds like a pretty good deal...esp for one gathering such a following so quickly! I would think those XD's would just be going up in price rather than holding steady or even going down!

at Academy the other night, the 5" XD-45 black was marked $578. That seems high compared to what members here are saying.

Which of the "less expensive" companies make the M1911 in the 4" size?

http://www.pdhsc.com/showcase1.htm Scroll down a bit and you'll see the 4"1911A1 GI Champion for $419.95, part no. PW9142L, from Springfield Armory. Just add shipping & FFL fee, and you'll still be under $500.

EDIT: I'll also strongly recommend you send a PM to user name Correia. He's one of the moderators, and owns a large gun store as well; www.fbmginc.com. He can get you good info on commander (4" to 4.25") size 1911s and pricing info. If the local stores don't have what you want find one who will recieve a gun for you a the standard $20-25 FFL fee and order from the web, Correia, or one of the other dealers who post here on THR. If nothing else, ask a local dealer if he'll take whatever the price you find online is plus shipping & FFL fee for the gun if he already has it in stock. At the very least you're showing him that you know how to get a better price. Just be polite about it and they should work with you when you arm yourself with pricing knowledge.

Bender I would stay away from Academy, they are high most of their stuff. The tactical length is going to be more than the service, i checked over at bullet trap in plano and they are going for $519 and they have them in OD green and the bi-tone if you like that too. they can be had for under $500 there if you are a member.sales tax is only 7.25% in lewisville, we dont have the DART 1% increase. wait for the dallas market hall show here in 2 weeks, you might find one hell of a deal, but like 10-ring said, i dont think the XD's will be dropping in price.

The thing about getting one of the local shops to do the FFL transfer for me from an online dealer, is the shop will pile on the 8% sales tax on top of it all.

I probably should get an AR-15 before a .45, just in case another AWB comes around.

Have you checked out the Taurus 24/7 Pro .45?

I picked mine up at Academy for $367.00 However i saw one there last week for $388.00. Still a hell of a deal for one hell of a gun!

My picks for a .45 around $500.

In no particular order:

SA G.I.
Armscor, Rock Island or Charles Daly brand
SA XD
High Standard. They just got into the 1911 market with a G.I. version that is getting good reviews.
Glocks, if you like them. I don't, but they do work well for those who use them.

what do you guys think a decent price on an XD-45 .45acp would be?

I got mine gently used for $475 out the door. It was an impulse buy at a pawn shop and there was a good return policy to back it up. Took it out to the range next day and promptly fell in love.

wow, that's cheap. I'm definately going to check those out....

How about a used XD-45? I have seen a whole lot of them for sale on the gun forums. If you're looking for concealed carry, have you thought about the taurus PT145? They are in the <$350 range.

ok, a basic question, which I'm sure has been asked before...

I'm not sure if I want a DAO gun. I'm not really sure what double action means in a semi-auto  Does DAO mean that every pull of the trigger is heavy, or only the first pull? My current semi-autos are an original Colt M1911 from 1921, and a Browning HP, so those 2 are what I am used to...

in a SA gun, when you insert a full mag, then pull the slide back to chamber the first round... the gun is cocked. Does DA mean that even when you pull the slide back to chamber the first round, the gun is NOT cocked yet?

SA, DA and DAO.

You're already familiar with SA so I won't re-hash.

DA is a long pull on the first round, SA pull after that.

DAO is a long pull every round, the pistol decocks itself on return to battery.

The shooting of the half inch group was from 10-12 yards. The gentelman who was using my Rock Island also had to deal with sights that were not properly adjusted. The new front sight was in but we are still waiting on the rear sight so the sights are less than desirable. Three rounds were fired and all three rounds were in a half inch group.

Sales Tax

The thing about getting one of the local shops to do the FFL transfer for me from an online dealer, is the shop will pile on the 8% sales tax on top of it all.

Allow me to clarify. Do not have the local shop order it for you and you then pay them for the gun and shipping. Tell them you would like to know their fee for the transfer, again usually $20 to $25. They will then give you a signed copy of their FFL to send to the dealer you're getting the gun from, or get their shipping info from you and send the FFL copy themselves. You order and pay for the gun and shipping fee from the out of state dealer via phone or internet so there is no sales tax. You only pay your local dealer the FFL fee, and NICS (background check) fee if aplicable. Your local dealer doesn't even need to know what you paid the out of state dealer for the gun. You bought it from the other guy, your local dealer is simply processing the transfer. Thats how you avoid the sales tax.

ugaarguy: ok, I get it. i pay the online dealer, have it shipped to local dealer, pay the local's fee. that's good, cuz one thing I really hate is sales tax :( I buy most of my stuff off the net.
