I own a M&P 45 "midsize", and a Sig P220. Both completely reliable, but the M&P goes for rides with me....the Sig sits home.

I think everyone should own at least one 1911. Just get it now and be done with it. You won't regret it. Maybe not a top of the line model but a basic 1911 is still a very nice gun.

Up your budget $100 and get a basic Colt 1911. They are excellent, hold their value and are well made. If not a Springfield Milspec or even Loaded should be in range as well. The real sleeper in this caliber is the CZ-97B. Sure its big and heavy, but very, very accurate out of the box.

What's the deal on the CZ 97? This gun isn't necessarily for ccw...

Great gun but it is huge. I personally cannot shoot it well because of its size. The length of pull and the grip width is too much for my little mitts. They are deadly accurate. You used to be able to get them for sub $400. It is hard to find NIB guns. Used go for about $600 to $650.

10 Round capacity. If it fit me I would get a one of the blued models. They are great looking.

Look at its cousin, the Tanfoglio Witness Match. I got mine OTD for a hair under $600.

If you're open to steel vs. plastic, check out a used S+W 4506 or 4516. You could find a nice one and add a holster, extra mags, back up recoil and mag springs and a bunch of ammo and still be under budget. Last you forever, too.

I agree. I have a no dash 4506. It's built like a tank, heavy as one also. I own 7 45 acp's. My 4506 is probably the last I would part with. The Glock 30 is the next best IMO. Both will put you under your budget with dollars left for extra mags and some ammo. the 4506 I bought used as a LE trade in from the Tulsa Ok sheriff dept. It was well used and carried from the looks of it. Been 100% for me no matter what I put thru it.

I'm 6'5". Let's just say I don't have little hands. :)

Lots of Choices New And Used

I bought a Brand New 1911 Springfield Armory Mil Spec 45 ACP in your price range. It is parkerized came with a hard sided box and has a LIFETIME warranty! I've heard nothing but good things about SA Armory customer service. This is an all steel FORGED gun. I did buy a Wilson Combat 8 rd mag for better feeding of hollowpoints and it is flawless now.

Other good new choices are the Ruger (built like a tank), S&W M&P (great grip to me I have small hands), XD, CZ (the 45 is a little thicker than the 9mm in the grip). I have a CZ 452 22LR Varmit rifle and it is fine piece of equipment. Great rifle for the money and the CZ guns should cost more than what they do. Give a look at CZ if it fits you.

Now if you go used, you can get some nice clean used stuff that is real nice like SIGS 220 and HK's. Sig has this program out where they factory refurbish guns and they are like new. I've seen some at gun stores. Look out at police trade ins of the S&W 45 Auto Stainless 59 full sized Series. Those are built like tanks too. Quality stainless steel and not real expensive and you can buy a lot of ammo. Those come in traditional double action or double action only. They are a little thick in the grips (This is why I chose a 1911) but if you have big hands you won't have trouble.

Find what fits your hand best and if you can go to a range and rent one or a gun club and try some that would be great too. Spend your time and don't get in a hurry. Good luck and have fun with gun shopping. My wife makes fun of me and says I like gun shopping at the gun stores, shows, and Bass Pro as much as her and women like going clothes shopping at malls.
