I am shopping for a .45 but have some requirements. What options are there out there with these requirements.

-has a manual safety
-under $600 new or used
-holds 11 or more rounds in the mag
-known for reliability
-double action or SA/DA

So far I am leaning heavy towards the Springfield XD service model that has the manual safety but wanted to know if there are other options.

That is a pretty tall order. The Springfield certainly meets all these criteria except that internally it is not a double action, but a single-action. The S&W M&P might squeak in around the $600 mark, is available with a manual safety and is a "semi"-DAO, but has "only" a 10-round magazine.

you could find a lot of nice guns for 600 used. if you're not looking for a ccw piece, I would look around for a used USP 45. I see them around for a little more than that all the time, so I'm sure you could find one in your price range if you looked hard. it has a manual safety that can be used in single or double action mode, reliable, 12 round mag, etc.

the FNP is another good choice, and may fit your budget better.

Thanks guys. I am down to the FNP or XD. Is the FNP known for relaibility amongst all types of ammo? Ive owned the XDs and know they are respected in that manner.

How about grip size? Can anyone tell me how big the grip is on the FNP? I would prefer smaller than the XD but its not a must.

FNP grip size is pretty big because it has 14 or 15 rounds of .45 in it. But it is a highly reliable weapon and its barrel is made the same way FN's rifle barrel's are, so high quality.

also the FNP grip has adjustable backstraps to help fit your hand better. Pick one up and it just feels right.

Springfield XD Tactical or Service Model, I own the service model and it is one of the best autoloaders on the market IMHO.

A used Witness .45 will meet your requirements. It's based on the CZ-97, is reliable, functions well, and can be found at lower price points.

No, I'm not just saying this because I happen to have one I'll be more than happy to sell you :)

Used FNP or Baby Eagle/Witness are about the only current production guns that'll meet those requirements at your price point.

The S&W 3rd gens would do nicely, except for capacity (they're all 7 or 8 rounders). You might consider them anyway, though. My 4516-1 is one of my favorite pistols. They're about the most robust combat auto's ever built as well.
