I just shot an armadillo with my .45 using Federal hydroshocks with at least 4 clean hits and possibly a 5th graze. It managed to run away and escape my German Shepherd. *** .45, aren't you supposed to drop a horse?

Hydra shoks are not armor piercing. Armadillos require at least a .308 AP round.

Who wants to eat Armadillo? They are nasty critters. They are also skinny under that shell. Did you hit the body?

Well maybe you will learn a basic truth. It isn't bullet diameter or high performance ammunition that does the job, but rather a direct hit on a vital organ. I am sure that the armadillo is dead by now, but it didn't go quickly. :uhoh:

I've shot a couple of raccoons with .45 Hydra Shoks, with similar effect. They were moving and it wasnt a "perfect" hit. The bullet basically just passed through, and without a whole lot of damage. The next round hit something that was important and did the job.

Another issue with shooting critters is, they havent watched a lot of TV and havent been conditioned to believe that because they just had their little pinky finger shot off with a .45, they are supposed to fall over dead.

Actually shooting living things tends to prove that out. They tend to be a lot tougher than those pesky paper targets. :)

Don't downplay the 45........you can't stop an armadillo in its tracks with any pistol round. Tried it many, many times. It just doesn't happen. Don't feel bad.

Los Armadillos

are neat creatures. No teeth (but effective digging claws), non-aggressive and the only other mammal on earth that can be infected with the Hansen's Disease bacillus (leprosy). They have contributed immeasurably to the fight against HD, not to mention festivals in their honor in several locations across this great nation of armadillo advocates.

I could never kill them with a 45 either; little b_____ds would jump six feet straight up & launch into the brush like Panzerschrecks... :what:

In terms of handgun rounds what would be the minimum to get through that armor with a direct hit? I ask because I want to know how thick that armor really is.

Hard to define, but the problem with armadillos is not getting through their armor. The little bastards just won't die.

They run off with their guts hanging out.

Do not try to judge handgun bullet performance on any small animal too stupid to know you killed it several times over.

Possums, and from what little I know about them, armadillo's, have only a rudimentary central nervous system and a tiny brain just barely big enough to do what they do.
Dig holes, eat anything, breed, and crap.

I have shot possums to doll-rags with a .22 autoloader until I ran out of ammo.
Then come back an hour later and find they got up and walked off.

If you don't shoot them in the head and hit the tiny brain, or blow them apart with a rifle or shotgun, they ain't dead until they leak to death somewhere else.

I used a .45 to kill one once. one shot at night while holding a flashlight from about 15 feet. It stayed put but was twitching really bad. So I decided to put it out of it's misery and put a few more rounds into it until it finally stopped.

BTW; by "few more rounds" I mean about ten or so

Its a little disturbing how much you guys like to kill small animals that haven't harmed you and deserve to be here just as much as anything else. Just sayin...at least eat 'em.

"haven't harmed you"..... Have you ever went out at night to find out what was bothering the horses and stepped into one of their holes that wasn't there earlier that evening?

MNGonzo...I don't want armadillo. I want pieces....30 WCF will do just fine...
