.45 Doubt

Excuse me, it's libel for written (as opposed to spoken) defamation, isn't it?

Implying a gun writer said that shot placement is totally unnecessary with a .45 (see the numerous "People believe Cooper about shooting 'em in the pinkie with a .45 lol" comments) when he did not, so far as I know, made such a statement would seem to fit the definition. Attacking a dead man by attributing statements to him that he did not make seems massively low class any way you look at it.

I should state for the record here (to stave off the inevitable accusations) that I'm not particularly a Cooper fanboy. His only work I've read is Art of the Rifle and a few magazine columns. I enjoy AotR but I'm not totally in agreement with him about the whole Scout rifle concept.

So, as I've said if he ever actually advocated that shot placement was of no concern as many here have said, then I withdraw my objection. If that is not the case, then a lot of people on this thread should be ashamed of themselves.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought.

There are only two references (not exactly "numerous" or "a lot") to Cooper on this thread that could be construed to be even somewhat negative. Neither of them says anything about someone getting shot in the pinkie. Here they are:

"Armadillos have never read Jeff Cooper..... They don't know they are supposed to fall over with one hit...."

"Because they think Jeff Cooper is God. Yep, hit 'em in the shoulder and blow 'em off their feet."

I don't believe it's accurate to state that either of those comments amount to implying that Cooper said "shot placement is totally unnecessary with a .45".

I've not read much of Jeff Cooper's stuff, but can anyone cite an instance where he said shot placement was not important when using a .45? If not, why are ya'll slandering a dead man? Talk about low road... :scrutiny:
Everything I've read sofar (Just finished Art Of The Rifle) indicates to me that shot placement is KING according to Mr. Cooper.

No handgun round is a good stopper. The myth of the .45's terminal advantages is blown way out of proportion. Whatever you hit with a handgun in the real world chances are you will have to hit it well and multiple times to drop it. The .45 is a good round. Just not any better than the other service calibers out there. But to the true believers their is just no talking any sense to them. Handguns are what we carry because we can wear them concealed. They are the worst tool for stopping dangerous animals (humans or otherwise) out there. But what we are most likely to have with us when we need it. You've simply found out the myth of the destructive power of the .45 is blown way out of proportion to reality. That's a good thing. It enables you to make a rational choice a carry gun based on what the y really do and really don't do. Common sense is slowly winning.

"possum on the halfshell" is good eating, if you're starving.

last one i kilt was with a 38 HBWC loaded backwards over 4 grains of green dot. dropped like a sack of potatoes.

OK the .12 Gauge has been mentioned several times as being a deciding tool .
But no mention of the shot used . What size shot will do the job and at what distance ? How far does each shot size penetrate this critter , or Possums or Coons for that matter ?

Don't downplay the 45........you can't stop an armadillo in its tracks with any pistol round. Tried it many, many times. It just doesn't happen. Don't feel bad.

I disagree

I've discovered the op's lesson on close to a dozen armadillos save my example was with a bersa 380 firing corbon hp's. Not one stop out of a box of 20rds

However everything I've shot with aguila sss 22lr rounds from a handgun including panzerlizards was DRT.

Either way the op is now a lifetime card carrying member of the "laugh at stopping power threads" group.

I hit one with a KLR 650 and that is more sporting ... c'mon.

Okay, that's even funnier. You'll forgive me if I try to miss them with my Goldwing, though, right?

Two reasons to shoot armadillo, 1, they can destroy the front end alignment of most any car, and 2, they dig holes that cattle to step in and injure themselves.
Besides they carry leprosy, don't eat them.
Thread necromancy, start a new one if you need to.
