45acp won't chamber

"a heavy taper crimp will, in essence, resize a lead bullet"

I submit to you, Mr. Bear that a heavy taper crimp will in fact resize a bullet. At least it did to the heavy taper crimp I put on that dummy round-took me a while to find my impact puller. It's been so long since I have had to use it. It tapered the bullet by .002" and may explain why they do not fly as welll as a properly assembled hand load. What I did with the heavy crimp is pretty much guarrantee the bearing surface of the bullet is not going to touch the rifling.

My G30 is finicky about my case mouth diameter. Anything over .473" and I get consistent jams. This only happens with cast or plated bullets, and happens most often with oversized cast bullets. I now run cast bullets through a sizer to avoid this. I've never had it happen with jacketed bullets.

I would like to thank everyone who responded. This has been real learning experience for me, and in the future, if I run into problems, I will be consulting this thread.

Thanks again,

Stinger

BTW, Delmar, thanks for the in-depth report...that's why I love this place :)

Any time, Stinger. Lord knows I have called on many people here in the past and will do so in the future. Shooting sports and recreation is one of the few where people hold no secrets, and are generally the friendliest people I know, bar none.

Well...I loaded 50 rounds of .45 ACP and belled them to .475. Seated the Hornady 185 grain JHP to 1.250 over a CCI 300 primer and 6.1 grains of W-231. Loaded 5 rounds in the magazine and hand racked each round into the chamber with the Colt Series 80 pointed at a barrel of sand (just in case). All rounds chambered to full battery with no problems, except one minor problem. When I remiked the rounds They were resized to .472 by the chamber and were set back to 1.240. Hummm. 1.250 is too long (OAL) for the Hornady bullet. Went back and reset each one to 1.200. Rechambered and no set back. I will take them to the range tomorrow and run them through my chronagraph (Pact 1) and see if I have a failure to go to battery.

Car knocker...The idea here was to try and create the same problem as has been discussed on this string (Stinger). The rounds were belled to .475 and chambered to see if my Colt would fail to go to battery. Instead the Colt resized the bell to .472 and had no problem. I just got back from the range. I fired all 50 of them and had absolutely no problem chambering or going to battery. Stinger...What firearm did you say you had that gave you this problem? Not sure why the Colt .45 ACP wouldn't have any problem with these rounds and yours would. Unless it is that heavy slide and the 16 lb recoil spring in mine.
As soon as I tabulate the results of my range work ( yeah right "work") I will put them in the right strings...I might even start my own string on one of them...

Oh. By the way Car Knocker. I never crimp any of my auto ammunition. And I have had no problems not doing so. That includes .45 ACP, 9 mm and .30-06.
