My graduation is comeing up in January and i will be getting money from family and friends(and i know not to count my chickens befor they hatch) but i know i will. I like the 460 and would like to know if anybody has anything they dont like about them besides price or things to stay away from. I will most likely be getting the Performance Center 460 and want to know what everyone thinks. I will be useing this to shoot deer in western nebraska and very little target shooting. So tell me your thoughts.

I seen a few of these on sale for $899.99 at a few local gun store's.I would NEVER try to fire one of these BEAST'S.But that's just me..

Graduation from high school, right?

I say go for it. You'll regret it if you don't. I know I spent money on gun-stuff when I graduated, but mine was a bit more exotic. I bought everything I needed to build a double barreled pump action shotgun.

I have no other info to contribute as I have no experience with these freakin huge and expensive revolvers. Looks like fun though. :D

The 460 is a pussy cat , my wife (120 lbs 5'7" ) shoots it with out a problem . I have an 8 3/8" bbl , mostly its heavy and clumsy , defiantly not a ccw rig, and its very accurate for a revolver.

Get yourself a good chest holster and a set of shooting sticks and you're set. The only drawback is the cost of ammo and the noise. Wear hearing protection even when hunting -- it is very loud. Everytime I shoot mine at the range, the RM checks to make sure I didn't have a "problem". Recoil isn't that bad.

First off, if I had to do it again, I would buy one from Magnum Research. I have had the frame replaced on my 12" PC. I had issues with flame cutting on the top strap and the main reason for the replacement of the frame from S&W (it was covered) is that there is no replaceable bushing like on the 500.

It looked like there was primer cratering happening but it was actually the steel deforming on the breachface.

Words of caution: Run heavier bullets through it 240gr+ DO NOT try to run 200gr at 2300fps+ these loads push the envelope of what the gun can handle.

After frame was replaced, I was shooting some heavier rounds 300gr and was having weird issues such as what I call chamber skip. When fired it would actually unlock and then when cocked again would "skip" a cylinder. I would shoot 3 rounds and it would then go click...??? What had happened was out of a full 5 round cylinder it would fire the first round, skip round 2 then go to round 3, fire, skip round 4 then go to round 5, fire, then back to chamber 1 where it would click because it had already been fired.

I have yet to contact S&W on this last one but have read that it happens a lot with heavy loads on the 500. Also after getting it back from the factory they did a poor job of sighting it in I am going to have to twist the front sight back into alignment as the rear sights are moved all the way to the left and it's still about 7 inches off at a mere 7yds.

The only advantage of the Smith's over the BFR's that I have seen are that they faster to reload. The double action is pointless unless you want the barrel implanted in your forehead or plan on shooting seagulls at high noon.

I can shoot my single action just as fast as the double action and more accurately I might add. The practicality of the double action is very limited IMHO.

I prefer the single action for strength from the BFR:

I bought my second one in a BFR but for the 500 S&W. I actually like the look of the BFR better, it shoots about equally as well, is cheaper, and seems quite a bit stronger.

I picked up my BFR for $699 and is the 10" model. The smith's warranty is nice but I think the 460 round is having issues very close to what the 357 max had.

Feel free to ask me any questions about either. Just send me a PM. Here are some pictures for you to enjoy:

I am not sure about double firing, but if you are referring to the chamber skip yes it had that, but I have never heard of any reports of it in the 460 caliber only the 500. Nonetheless, it happened to me...I am still unsure as to why.

S&WKING, double firing is a result of the shooter not the gun. And yes the recoil of the 460 Mag is a lot less then the 500 Mag.

Big Boomer, I have to agree with you on some points. I happen to own both the S&W 460 and 500 Mags, as well as a BFR in 500 Mag and 45-70. I love all the guns equally, but I do like the BFR, they just look cool.
I have not had any problems with the S&W's or the BFR's.

My personal opinion says go with the regular S&W, not the PC. This is simply based on looks alone though, I just can't like the way the barrel and frame don't flow together. It just looks like some kind of backyard barrel thrown on what was a nice looking Smith. Just my thoughts though, to each his own.

Graduating from high school? This will be very cool, I got a Smith 686 when I graduated, sure wish I still had it... :(

yea high school. all the kids get big sound systems for there cars and trucks and five years they will be worthless. my dad is getting me a DPMS 204 and i will buy the 460 from gift money and five years they will still be worth something so thanks for the help

<<So how do you like the full comp?>>

Very useful for night hunting (Texas hogs, the big ones). Directs the flash all forward. I don’t know the difference in recoil (muzzle jump)? Actually, never did a test on it. Using the same loads and exchanging out the comps.
Going to be a plentiful of them around (hogs), more than ever (as they say), because all the rain Texas had this past season...Land owners are panicking (not really).
If the hail, thunderstorms, flooding or web-worms didn’t get you? Those hogs will. They can do some pretty bad damage. Something like out of a Steven King novel.

I've always wanted one of these hand cannons. I go back and forth between the S&W 460ES that comes in the neato yellow box and has some survival gear PLUS a comforting book on the most horrific bear attacks. Then I swing back to the Carry Comp with a 5" bbl and comp. I've fired a friend's 460 ES snubnose and although I did hit the target at about 7 yards, it was not real fun mostly due to the muzzle blast (felt like a kick in the teeth) and uncomped muzzle jump. I've never been to Nebraska or hunted that type of terrain but I would think the shots would be a lot of long open shots and even with a barrel long enough to use a tripod, this might be an exercise in frustration.

For the money, I think there are alot of other badass guns out there that you'd get more use out of. That's just me though. You could get a nice AR-15, 10mm, FAL, etc.

My 460 doesn't see a lot of action, 400 rounds in a little over a year but it is definitely a lot of fun to shoot. Incredibly accurate and versatile.
Occasionally I'll shoot it at the indoor range when there's only a few people and it definitely draws attention.

They are great guns. I have shot the .460 and the .500 and the .460 actually seemed to have a bit more kick than the .500

Go with the long barrel for hunting but if you want to have some fun shoot a short barreled .460..... i think the muzzle blast singed my hair!

oklahoma caveman, the recoil of the 45-70 in the BFR is not bad at all, I bought one and I have been shooting 405 gr. bullets loaded on the low side of the Marlin load data. About half of the felt recoil of my BFR in 500 Mag.

GlowinPontiac, I also own both a S&W 460 and 500 Mag, the 460 Mag in my opinion has more flash than felt recoil, that is what you might see the difference. I have shot 390 gr. bullets in my 460 Mag and 400 gr. in my 500 Mag and I felt the recoil a lot more in my 500 Mag. I have owned 5 of the S&W 500 Mags and 6 of the S&W 460 Mags. I have noticed the same thing in each of them. I bought different barrel length to see which one I liked the best. Now my buddies all own either a 460 or 500 Mag, and a couple own both as I do.
