A ton of info on loading from one of our members on this site http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=3297

Because of this I decided not to load. I actually have a bunch of brass once shot and brand new dies that has never been used. The lacquer on the case is very important and after speaking with a former 3 letter agency guy that was very familiar with this cartridge and him saying FN never intended for this cartridge to be reloaded.

I would love to have some data on catastrophic failure for this round.
FN feels like a European Snob club. Americans get a hold of FN “non-reloadable brass” and be like, Hold my Beer

Armscore Bullets seat depth and cycling test.

Better than, the V-Max, but still have minor issues with the extractor not grabbing the case.

Set backs, after 10 cycles I’m getting some setbacks of .002 but not all rounds. I think it’s from the rounds not extracting and ramming each other from double feed

Conclusion. I need to get some factory ammo (impossible) or V-Max 40 Grain and make factory dummy rounds to trouble shoot.

is is me or does that Armscor pagage refer to bullets as bullet heads? ...

Yeah, I mentioned that in post# 40 :

Observation from Post#1 ...

Armscor sells sacks of Bullet Heads ? o_O

:)

... but from Mark_Mark's response in #42 I detected a possible whiff of non sequitur so I just quietly moved along. ;)

what? I didn’t understand any of that... what is sequitur? or whiff

Sorry I've been inactive for so long, it wasn't until someone pinged me in this thread that I pulled my head out of the sand and made an appearance.

I took RC's death badly, and this is the first time since he passed that I have ventured over to the reloading forum.

That being said I still have a lot of experience reloading a bunch of oddball calibers from the diminutive 5.7 up to the massive 50 BMG, and my library of reloading books goes back to the early 1900's..*** so if anyone has any hard technical / weird questions that needs an old timer feel free to tag me in any other threads you need input in, and I'll do my best to give 0.02.

*** totally not joking

His spirit lives on, in you, through the goodwill of teaching.

Welcome back, friend.:)

There's more to it than that. Been kicking around opening up a new outdoor shooting range, but that's a topic for another thread when things get further along. :)

Aside from killing things that need killing, I haven't shot a gun for sport or practice in at least 6 years. Since I keep killing the things that need killed at the farm, I haven't really felt a pressing need to do much practice or competitive shooting outside that environment.

However, as I get older, and I notice more trends, I came to the conclusion that a whole new generation of shooters who don't know their ass from their elbows are out there handling guns, and many lack proper facilities in which to learn and practice the fine art of marksmanship. So I got this idea that maybe, perhaps, an older guy like me who knows his way around ballistics and coaching might open a facility where they could do that.

We have one outdoor range here in our county, and it's membership is capped at 300 souls. Meanwhile, we have over 35,000 gun owners (based on IL state FOID data) living here. Only a small fraction of people who own guns actually have the facility available to practice with them.

That cannot stand. :)

Look at that math???? looks like a Alien language. Who ever thought math was a good thing, needs to go camping and stop nerding out. I mean Math should be out of sign out of mind.

Anyways, thanks for stopping by my 5.7 redneck journey. You write real good man!

LOL yes the math on spherical trig nonlinear equations for exterior ballistics calculations is a bit rough to digest. At the time I was working on a better ballistics calculator for my own use. The existing ones were close but not quite good enough for what I wanted. I wanted to be able to model 6 degrees of freedom and take more variables in to consideration than existing computer ballistics programs that were on the market could do. (Part of that stems from my prior multi-decade career of computer programming, as a systems architect).

Once I developed a better understanding of what was happening it all became rather intuitive, and I could just feel it when I got in my bubble during long range shooting.

As far as 5.7x28mm goes, it's a great little cartridge, and one that found a very practical use in my day to day life. I literally live, work, and sleep next to a PS90 and the FiveSeven leaves the house with me to work every day in the fields. When I go to town I take the G19 9mm, concealed, but in the country I just open carry the FiveSeven every day.

This cartridge has proven effective at accurate one-shot dispatching of everything I've run across that needed killing, and everything I've shot with it was DRT.

Glad I could stop by and contribute a little!

Also, after seeing dozens (hundreds?) of predators and livestock dispatched with the cartridge, I have zero doubts whatsoever about it's ability to do the same to two legged predators.

If you ever shoot an animal with the round, you'll understand. The wound track is.. impressive. The VMax round effectively fragments on impact (dare I say, vaporize), leaving behind a mess of meat, bone, tissue, and perforated blood vessels. Also, because the jacket is so light, anything you do miss, effectively fragments the round on impact (e.g. shallow angle hits against dirt, etc), effectively becomes a non-issue; not as much risk for anything downrange.

As far as accuracy, I used a PS90 in one of the matches I officiated in just for fun one day - with 100, 200, and 300 yard stages.

While my scores weren't official (as I was the official, I didn't award myself a win) I did manage a high master score in a standard high power midrange match (which included MR63's at 300 yards, a tough target to score well on even on good days with a match rifle), and I beat a field of 20+ seasoned participants with glittering AR15 match rifles. :)

That was with the stock gen2 optics on the PS90, no magnification.

I also did this without a shooting coat or any other accessories typical of a high power match, while everyone else had their fancy carts and coats on, I just had my CRSO blaze yellow vest. :)

The interesting part was the standing stage - the PS90 is *remarkably* stable as in the standing position, much more so than an AR15. It was literally like a rock, compared to an AR15. Our standing stage was at the traditional 200 yard line.

Which is why I carry the PS90 at the farm in the truck or ATV. If there's a coyote within 300 yards of me, with that PS90, it's going to die, right there, even if I'm standing when I take the shot.

I honestly don't think I could do that as reliably with an AR, they are just not as stable when in the standing position. And in a farm field with taller growth, you can't exactly go prone to get a good sight picture.

ETA: it's worth noting that I never was able to best the score I put on that day with the bone stock PS90, even with my match AR-15. The damn gun is just a remarkable instrument to shoot with.

thanks man! you ever see UFO’s on your farm? I think I was stalked by a Big Foot when I was in the Woods here... We have large vast forest in Washington with great big trees. Well I was walking in the woods and I smelled something FOUL! real nasty, I thought it might have been a bear, but the smell followed me all the way down the trail to my Prius.

Crazy thing is... it’s happened more than once, like 3 times... give me goose bumps

No, we just get the occasional low flyover of the government checking in on what I'm growing. :)

The state uses our Industrial Hemp cannabis sativa fields for training on their FLIR helicopters and planes. We're close enough to Springfield that my farms are very often the target of low flyovers of the DEA planes when they are doing training to teach their agents how to spot cannabis fields out in the country. :)

Been more than once I've been holding a rifle while I look up and wave at them!

I'll probably never reload this cartridge, but have to say this is a fun thread

when you say seating depts is .15 - do you mean .15 of the bullet in the case? isn't that a bit skinny?

thanks! just wait for the load test... I keep shooting my chono, and they are over price
