Doesn’t sound like 45 ACP where one can shoot and reload them until the headstamp is gone.

How many reloads does one typically get out of a case before it does this?

I should have picked it up when we were done playing with their P90 they are as much of a brass hose as they are a bullet one and the bottom eject would have made it pretty easy.

that’s you! Lucky son of a Angle

that was like $200 worth of ammo and $300 worth of brass

i used rubbing alcohol after 1st sizing and it came right off
I should first say that I started the attempt to reload 5.7 but never followed through with this journey. I did clean spent cases using a quick, diluted, Simple Green bath, stirring by hand for a few minutes and I was satisfied with the case cleanliness and the preservation of the lacquer.

that’s you!

No, I was taking that video but we all took turns, pretty fun afternoon.

Guess this is the only other video I have uploaded but others I liked were the PDW, M240&M249’s don’t even wear out your thumbs shooting the last two.

I shot full auto once! and it was a blast. Back in Charlotte NC years ago, they had this back wood range that rented full auto. We picked the MP5 and M4. The guy didn’t even ask if we knew anything about full auto. Just handed the guns over the counter and said, HAVE FUN.

it’s not bad at all, very simple... reloading that is

At the time I really wanted to own a PS90, but I insist on being able to reasonably reload for all of my centerfire cartridges.

Following that Thread, I finally realized that there was much more involved than I was willing to do ...
THAT is exactly why I sold my PS 90. It is also part of what pushed me into the .22 TCM....that & nearly 2x the ft#'s.

Sadly, besides RIA 2011's, no other firearms have arrived nor additional ammo manufactures.

Ruger 57 is cool. but the 5.7 x 28 was not ment to be reloaded. my next buy after a 1911 will be the .22 tcm RIA. I believe the parent case is 5.56

I never reloaded them enough times to find out. I don't believe I ever intentionally reloaded more than 2 times. On the 3rd firing they got left at the range.
If there was a primer crimp then I knew it was first firing. If the primer crimp had been removed then I knew it was 2x fired, those were makes as to not be picked up after firing that 3rd time.

alright, that point will now be ingrave in my head!

Adding a mark on the head stamp is probably a good idea.
Oh and I have not reloaded federal 5.7x28 brass yet. The federal pile keeps getting bigger but I always put off loading it till next time. I was probably going to load them as 55gr subsonics.
If I could keep track of the brass maybe I would load them a 4th or 5th time as subs.

55gr Sub-sonic, 900 fts in 5.7 = a power factor of a good night at the Mexican restaurant

49.50 Power Factor

I load mine to be subsonic in the pistol only, usually around 1,100fps. Pretty much for shooting coyotes discreetly.

does the 5.7 x 28 head space on the shoulder of the case? I’m test loading the soft point .05 under printed source. I want to crimp on the canaliver

It has to head space off the shoulder as its a rimless, beltless bottle neck.
I have always loaded it like it head spaces on the shoulder, use the correct shell holder, I smash the case all the way into the full length sizer die and trim.
With the 5.7 you can easily get cases that are too long if you don't trim them every single time. Never tried making them too short.
I'm pretty sure you could take 50 off the case length and crimp on the dotted line if you wanted to.
I have probably loaded those same bullets and just sink the crimp cannelure into the case mouth.

that’s what I’ll do... I just need .05

it’s not like these cases will last more that 3 loads

@Trent was also the one who brought the issues with 5.7x28 bullet setback to light. As I recall the American Eagle bullets had quite a bit of setback from just one chambering.

Yes, American eagle set back on chambering in both rifle and handgun. It resulted in overpressure signs, such that primers would flatten or pop. Standard deviation on measured chronograph velocity also showed a wild range of variation in velocity which would be consistent with this causing a variable powder cavity size due to setback. I don't know if their processes have changed in the intervening years but at the time it was released, AE ammo was not safe for use in any 5.7 platform for those reasons.

FN factory ammo is .. for lack of a better term, has bullets "glued" in to place to prevent setback, which - as it's a blowback cartridge - is not a bad idea. If you ever tried to use a kinetic puller on factory 5.7 ammo it's .. exhausting. :)

When you handload 5.7 you *absolutely must* pay close attention to neck tension! I would put money on the amount of rapid-self-disassemblies you see of five seven handguns using reloads is in large part due to bullet setback and the overpressure from the resulting compressed charge. If I recall correctly, the dies I used were specifically set up to provide a very tight neck tension on my loads.

There's a long thread on reloading 5.7 on here that I made, which you guys can feel free to use as a reference.

By the way, 5.7x28mm continues to be my go-to for use on the farm. I carry a five seven and keep a PS90 in the ATV or truck (whichever I'm using at the time).

There's a long list of predators I've dispatched over the years, on our poultry farm, with this caliber - we raise certified organic turkey and chickens.

Nothing has ever needed a second shot. I also use this caliber to dispatch any livestock that are beyond hope.... or ready for the dinner table. It puts them down faster than slicing the neck.

thank Trent! Neck tension, got it. The RCBS small base die I’m using has very tight neck tension. Thanks for the resources, I’ll be checking it out for load data

Seating depth. Does anybody have numbers?

or does anybody know the leight of a V-Max .40 Gain? Then I can figure the proper seating depth

I think the round is interesting for experimental fun.
Oh I had fun learning to load it, but the AR-57 was boring to shoot, and in the end not worth fooling with the 5.7 for. On another note, loading for my 6 Dasher is more trouble than the ordinary rifle round the way I do it, but it's well worth it IMHO. Shot a bunch of those Saturday, time to get loading again. :)
