I resized my first batch of 5.7 x 28mm brass today. Some small patches of the coating that is supposed to aid proper action cycling peeled off. Is this enough to keep them from functioning properly/safely?

See attached pic. Shiny spot near the bottom of the case.

the coating is for the P90 mags because it does a 180 degree spin in the mag

90°. Not 180.

Just a fan, vs high speed photography and 3D animations but decent overview of how it all works:

It goes double stack to single, then rotates 90, then gets stripped and fed into the chamber. Lots going on.

that’s a ton of ammo in a little mag

From a thread on the FN forum by one of the administrators.

Do with it whatever you wish.

Knowledge that I have taken to heart and assume is required propects from reloading over 9K pieces of 5.7X28mm brass over the last 10 years:

The lacquer assist in loading the cartridges into the magazines.
The lacquer aids in the brass transitioning from the magazine into the firearm chamber (FiveseveN, PS90 and PS90 SBR)
The lacquer assist in the cartridge remaining seated into the chamber during pressure buildup
The lacquer assist in the removal of the used brass from the chamber of the firearm.

While I have very limited experiences with using brass that the lacquer coating has been removed from, my results indicated that the lacquer coating is a "must have" for optimal operation of the 5.7X28mm brass in the 5.7x28mm platform.*

Observations from the removal of the lacquer from the brass has left me with 5.7X28mm cartridges that fail to feed, fail to load properly, fail to eject properly. My advice on this subject is to leave the lacquwr intact on the brass

* This knowledge is based upon direct observation, speaking with other reloaders about this particular issue, Converaions with Bob Ailes, Tommy Thacker and other FNH USA personnel that I have had the opportuity to question about this very subject. The 5.7x28mm platform produced by FNH is Herstal Belgium and Fredericksberg, Virgnia

Why did FN gotta be so complicated on there rimless .22 mag, Yeah I said it… .22 MAG with pretty bullets

I'm pretty fussy about cleaning all my brass in a wet tumbler with stainless steel pins but when it comes to my 5.7x28 I simply wipe the cases down with a microfiber rag after sizing with either Unique or Dillon case lube.

I am new to this reload, but have read enough that I do not tumble this brass and only wipe it down, before loading. I am using Acc #7 and Hornady 40gr Vmax bullets, and have had ok success so far, depriming, sizing, and reloading on my single press only, and taking plenty of time, to do it. Out of the 50 that I have shot, no problems with loading or cycling, out of my FN fiveseven.

Just tumble it, it’s not going to hurt it or your gun

As you are the resident expert, how many reloads do YOU get from a piece of brass??
What bullets do you use?
What Powder
Dies?? Do you have a case gauge??
FN pistol or a Ruger??

I considered loading for it some time ago but read how difficult it was and expensive, Now with ammo so high priced I may consider it .

I did a whole thread (Very very very long) on loading the 5.7 about a year ago

Do you trim your brass?

How about a link to your thread?

Do you trim your brass?
Yes… and that’s were the issue comes. I don’t know were it headspace but if you trim to the SAMMI thing, your seating depth is TINY! Hope you have very small fingers. Or buy the hornady seating die with the steam.

How about a link to your thread?
Too lazy to use my finger man. give me a sec to get off this basement sofa

best part of loading the 5.7 is the crazy amount of .224 bullets available, definitely a reloaders cartridge. I want to see a 5.7x28 green tip!!!!

I am going to stick with just wiping my prepped brass off, and avoid the tumbling for now, as the coating staying on for as long as possible, is a concern of mine. Thanks to everyone ,in all the 5.7x28 posts, as I weighed all the info I could find, before jumping into this caliber. And don't think, for a minute, that I won't be buying factory ammo, when available, as I am still not a great fan of reloading this, but I love the gun, so got to do what I got to do.
