Do you guys have any suggestions for me? Can't decide between Glock 26, 19 or S&W M&P or HK USP versions that are similar? Maybe the Browning?

The P2000 is a bit smaller than the USP, easier to conceal, very light, and has interchangeable backstraps so you can make it fit your hand. 9mm, 13+1 rounds. I absolutely love mine, but I suggest handling one to see if it's right for you. Ambidextrous controls, light, ergonomic (for me), highly accurate (for me). Might be worth looking at. Good luck!

Edited to add: If the G19 fits your hand and points naturally, it might be the pistol for you.

Your best bet is to go to The Firing Line in Northridge, Huntington Beach, or Burbank and try out the different guns there. See also Sharpshooters in Torrance and check out what they have.

People can say what their favorites are, but ultimately, it comes down to what feels best in your hands and you are comfortable with. It sounds like you've made up your mind on a polymer framed 9mm. Personally, I'd make my first gun a 9mm Single Action/Double Action with a .22LR conversion kit on it. That'd be either a High Power, 1911, or CZ.

I bought my girlfriend a S&W M&P compac in 9mm and she loves it. She was with me when I bought it. She is 5' 2" and about 140 lbs or so. The one we got had removable and changeable plates for the back of the grip. She loves it, but you should see what is best for you.

How about the springfield xd subcompact 9mm very dependable, its what my wife carries. Around $500.00 with night sites.

Thank you for all the advice...appreciate as much as possible...gonna go demo these guns. Any more suggestions are welcome?

Best thing to do is go to a range that "rents" guns and try some on for size, then shoot it also, try a 9mm, feel comfortable with it fine....But after you buy a firearm get some training.......:cuss:.....get some more training. Just don't shove it in the drawer thinking it's there if I need it.
Also get your self a good flashlight such as a Surefire.

I'll get off the soapbox now and return you to your scheduled listing now.....;)

A Walther P-99 would probably fit your hand better than any of them. You should go to a range and try at least three different guns. The Walther should be one of them. You can get one from Germany by buying from a dealer online, but they cost a little more than the ones made by S&W.

As others have said - get something that fits and is comfortable. Don't get all hung up on firepower and capacity. (yet) Fit is most important and you will know when you find it.

My suggestion would be to try a Kahr K9. Nice single-stack 9MM, although a little expensive. I love mine.

Good luck!

Given your location, your best bet is to see if you can find a local FFL to receive online purchases for you. From what I remember, the closest guy worth considering is Ade's in Orange. I never found a good guy close to use, so I bought all my guns from the stores themselves. I'd check turners.com and look at their weekly ads on Tuesdays. Big 5 has great sales prices too. You could also ask The Firing Line or Sharpshooters if they'd order anything for you.

Another good place to check is calguns.net and look in the Private Firearms Sales sections and look for a used gun from someone in the LA/OC area. You can do the transfers for about $35.

But one thing I'd strongly recommend is looking for a .22LR pistol conversion or start with a whole gun. I guess that makes Glock the only real choice from the list you gave earlier.

My fiancée likes the Bersa Thunder 380 I got her. It's a very nice little gun and I'm rather fond of it myself. I carry a sig, and I expect a lot from my guns, but I have actually been impressed with the Bersa. It's 380 which is sufficient for self defense. It's blowback operated, so it can get kind of strenuous on the wrist after a lot of shooting, but it's way better than the Walther as far as comfort is concerned. It is essentially based on the Walther PPKS design, but with some modern improvements and a lot of nice safety features, in case you have children.

My fiancée has been eying the sig P232 as well, but I have no experience with it.

Look at the SIG 239 (I carry an old 225 9mm myself). Also, keep an eye out for the new SIG 250 due in a month or so.

Have been very impressed with the Para Carry 9 as well.

try the beretta px4. the 9mm has a rotating barrel system. a friend has one, says there is almost no recoil at all.

Questions

...

1. Is the 9mm going to be for SD/HD and range time, with a lot of target practice?

2. Or Are you thinking on CCW, as well?

If the #1, check out the Beretta 92FS, lower price than many, and it has the straight grip, like 1911's, and does not have any recoil to speak of, and is VERY accurate, both close and long range. Comes with rubber grips, or with plastic, your choice of colors as well.

Check one out:

Try a bunch and see what you like the best. A 9mm is a good choice for a first centerfire pistol, but a good .22 will teach you quite a bit about how to shoot as well.

And I think mindset matter most. I had a girlfriend who loved my G-17 or Walther P-99. Current GF can't hold a semi-auto hard enough to get it to cycle but really likes revolvers (and .22s ;) ). Actually, she likes .44 Specials in an N-frame S&W, which is about equal to a 1911 .45 ACP in recoil.

Come to think of it, try that out and see how it feels. A 1911 and a .22 conversion would work well too, albeit a bit too large if you want to CCW with it.

And get good training and coaching! A good coach will be able to instill all of the proper fundamentals into you so they become second nature.

My wife likes 1911's in .45 and she is close to your size and weight. They can be had in 9mm if you like.

She does not like guns with double stack mags due to the larger grip.
Give a Kahr a try while you are at it.
