Ok, here's the deal, I've got $600 that's begging to be spent on a new gun. I've been itching for a 1911, but as a first-timer in the 1911 department, I don't wanna pick the worst starter platform (it'd be just my luck), so I'm looking to the 1911 experts on here for some advice. Before anyone says, "well, for a couple hundred bucks more....", I agreed to not spend more than $600 if the wife agreed to let me get a new gun, I'm not gonna push the limits on that, so I'm looking at $600 out the door. I've got the extra cash to spend more, but that's not the point. Anyways, am I even in the neighborhood for a decent starter at that price or do I need to let go of the 1911 pipedream and stick to the Glocks and Springfield XD's like I have for a while? Any info would be appreciated, I've been mulling this one over for a few months....

For $600, no problem. For $600 OTD, you're really limited to the lower end stuff.

My Para GI Expert was $550. Came in right around $600 with tax. It's a nice gun. Nicer than the ever-popular Springfield Armorys, IMO. (better sights, finish, and mags for the money.) Nice tight fit too, for a GI gun.

Wait a bit when the Ruger SR1911 is more plentifull, and buy that.

Springfield GI or Mil Spec
Rock Island Armory Tactical or basic
Remington
Ruger

anyone of the above and you can't go wrong. The issue will be finding one in stock.

Well I know this is not under 600 its 642 but if you could talk the wife into the extra 42 bucks it would be well worth the money, maybe pick up pop cans or sell some stuff totally worth it. The RIA match is hand fitted and one of the best (if not the best) 1911 for that 600 range. It also comes with more features then the other models but that you could asways upgrade a stock model to.

Here a link for the match.

Now STI also makes a great gun for 600 flat but that won't be out the door and only ones you gonna find for 600 or under with everything are one of the base or tactical model RIA's.

Heres a link to all of RIA products in your price range.

I'm sure you would be happy with any of the guns above tho if you can I would really push for the match, Give it a look and read some reviews its impressive.

Wow, thanks for all the input. I went and looked at some of the RIA's, they look pretty good and felt pretty nice and were priced on point. I did get to handle the Ruger SR1911, that one was super nice, they wanted $745.00 for it, but man was it sweet. I've heard mixed reviews on the Para stuff, decisions, decisions....

There it is. 9mm or .45. Best deal on the market. Made in USA too.
The Spartan is the only STI 1911 not made in Georgetown, TX. It does use STI-made internals, which STI makes here and then ships overseas, but the rest is foreign and made under contract by Armscor. They are made on a separate line from RIA and the others, which do not contain the STI internals.

All other STI 1911s and 2011s, including nearly every component, are made here in Texas. They make their own hammers, sears, etc.

I don't own a 1911 :( but I have heard nothing but good about the Taurus PT1911. I believe those run a little less than $600 and they come with all the goodies.

This one on Hinterland for $550 Taurus PT1911

I have several (not enough yet) 1911s, experience has taught me that lower price range 1911 pistols are sometimes OK. If $600 was all I could spend I would try to negotiate with the wife for some leeway (then again it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission). At $625 shipped from Buds Gunshop.com the STI Spartan is a great entry level 1911, if you do not live in KY like I do then you would save the tax too. I have a nearly new Para Ordnance GI Expert with proprietary sights, a horrible trigger and 2 magazines that are in the trash now. It would not feed a complete magazine until I worked the feed ramp over. Out of the box my STIs have all worked and shot better than anything in their price point. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/411543180
Spartan may not be 100% American made, but it is a proven performer, works well for me. The only 1911 that shoots noticeably better that I own (that is not and STI) is a Les Baer Premier II.

96, since you agree with;
1911 pistols are military pistols and, as such, Furthermore, no Models of 1911 were made after about 1923 so no 1977 or 1978 pistols can be Models of 1911. In fact, no military Model O pistols of any model were made after 1945.
do you really think you can buy a 1911 for 600$?

$600 1911

No-Brainer.

Wait a few months when the price comes down and availability goes up, or save up a few more dollars and get the Ruger 1911. Or get the Remington.

One good reason- the resale, if you ever have to sell it, will be much higher than other $600 guns. And the Ruger is Stainless, which is a steal at anything under $700 for that quality.

Oh, and Ruger has very good customer service

While I'm waiting for my SR1911 to arrive, I purchased a Citadel 5" 1911 for less than $500 and have had a ball with it.

Only have about 400 rounds through it but it s totally reliable and often shoots 10-shot, 25 yard groups of less than 3".

LGS then had the Citadel 3 1/2" .45 ACP for $460, out the door!

I figured it would make a nice wall decoration or boat anchor if it did not shoot, but I've been surprised to find that it too is totally reliable. Groups with the 3 1/2" barrel are running about 4" at 25 yards (that is 30-shot groups, 10-shot groups often go around 2 1/2").

At least the two of them are helping me learn about .45 ACP while I'm waiting for the SR 1911 to show up.;)

I now have two bullet molds, dies, brass, etc. etc. and have learned to do a "plunk test" to get the COAL correct for a particular gun.

May sell the 5" Citadel when the SR1911 shows up because I neither want nor need a "collection" of 1911's. I much prefer collecting revolvers.:)

Lots to learn!
