Try the RIA, its an affordable choice, leaves some dough left over for hoster, mags, ammo, etc. Also, Ive heard good things about them.

don't listen to him, he doesn't even own a 1911 so I don't think he should be giving advice about 1911's. He's only 16 or 17yrs.

I think we should keep the personal attacks out of the forum and focus on what the OP originally asked.

For $600 out the door you will be looking at the following for new:
RIA/Armscor
Metro Arms
Para
Citadel
Regent

For used, with a great deal of searching:
Springfield G.I. maybe a Mil-spec
STI Spartan
and all the others above without searching as hard

Based on reviews of them I'd go with the RIA personally with the limit being $600 out the door, probably the tactical model for the better sights mainly. I don't like the G.I. sights.

I agree with those recommending the new Ruger 1911. Once the initial enthusiasm wears off, my guess is that you'll be able to get one for around $600.00 or less.

Take a look at the American Classic Trophy! Nice piece! Under $600.

For just a little over $600 STI Spartan!

Hope that helps!

I have OWNED two, actually. However, I have not owned the RIA, but I work with a fellow who has a Colt and RIA, both 5", and he favors the accuracy of the RIA. Sadly, I apologize if I offended anyone replying to fellow poster Tape. I myself feel that if an OP asks for guns inside a certain budget, he/she is not asking if it is a swell idea to save ANOTHER $50-$100 for a gun above his or her budget. There are 1911's to be had in that range, and to blatantly dismiss his or her request for ideas within that range are off topic...as are the back and forth between posters of varied opinion. I am not indeed sixteen or seventeen years old, but I do sometimes find myself arguing with folks of that caliber i.e. Tape. So, again, I apologize fellow posters.

Go for RIA.

Saw an FNP .45 for $550 with the complete shooters pack at the local gun store last weekend. I have only one semi-auto that isnt rimfire and its an FNP-9.

You could have a RIA tactical for under $500, including shipping and transfer fee. Probably a Taurus for under $600 including everything.

I'd save up a bit more and spring for the STI Spartan if I were you, though.

$600 1911 = Ruger SR1911. That's what I'm picking up for my first 1911 in a few short months.

Why buy an American-designed classic made in Brazil or the Philippines when you can get one 100-percent US-made for the same price?

Ruger, Ruger, Ruger.

I agree first of all. Don't be ridiculous guys.

On your lists, Bud's regularly has the Springfield GI pop up for just over $500 shipped and the Mil Spec for just under $600 shipped. They aren't always in stock, but anything worth having is something worth waiting for right? ;)

In your "apology" you felt the need to get one last little jab in. Best thing you could do is not post anything other than more suggestions for a sub $600 1911. ;)

I'd recommend the American Classic over the RIA myself. Nicer finish and better fit. The Commander from American Classic might be a new "beater" gun on my short list.

No jabs, only honesty. I at least have the charisma to apologize. Any who, who makes this American Classics or whatever? Is it a subsidiary, as I've honestly not heard of it. How is it any more fit than RIA?

Iff'n I was gonna buy a 1911, I'd look at the STI Spartan. Retails about $700 but, if you know an ffl, he/she could prob'ly knock off about 10-15% and get it close to your wallet swell.

Good luck in the hunt.

meanmrmustard- My local gunshop smith swears by the American Classic. From what I remember they are an import - Philippines - brought in by Eagle Imports of Bersa fame.

Hmmm...seemingly more and more of the "el cheapos" are coming outta the Phillipines, just like armscor/RIA. I'll have to look at these AC 1911 myself.

Call it what you like, I'm done with that nonsense. ;)

American Classic comes from the same country as RIA from a different manufacturer. Search Google and check out some of the stuff on the 1911 forums about them. Overwhelmingly good things are being said. Take that for what you want. As far as fit is concerned, it is tight where it should be on a 1911. The finish is nicer and the features and quality are on par. From what I've seen their warranty and customer service is as good as RIA as well. Last but not least they offer a Commander sized pistol that is true to the size with bushing and all. RIA does not. I'm not a fan of the bushingless barrels on a 1911. My preference, but that's a big selling point for me. All that added up is enough for me to choose them over RIA.

I strongly recommend it. If you are a fan of RIA, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the American Classics.

Seriously? After tax , fees, shipping, whatever, you are paying $600.00 for a brand new SR1911? Please tell me where. Lowest I've seen on the net is $659.00.

IMO the RIA Tactical is a great bang for the buck. I've been VERY pleased with mine.

But... I much want the Ruger SR1911. Bit of a pain to get one behind the tofu curtain tho... :(

Yes, Nova. Seriously.

I ran across a post on another forum from a guy who picked up a new SR1911 for $599 OTD from his LGS in Paris, Texas. He could be full of warm dog squeeze, but who am I to judge? There are deals out there, you just have to find them.

http://centerfiresystems.com/1911.aspx

centerfire has RIAs starting for under $400. They have a dozen different models with most of the upgrade options available that people usually want. They're great guns and you'd have money left over after you upgrade the grips and magazine to buy a couple hundred rounds of ammo.
